What kind of a job is it to convert 336 from 540 RPM to 1000 RPM, and are the used parts available?

Isn't your tractor convertable from 540 to 1000? Most were....
I'm not aware of any way to convert the baler (not that there wasn't a kit... I'm just not aware of any). I also think it a very poor idea to try and run a baler with a 1000 shaft at half engine speed. The engine is not going to be making enough power/torque at low speed to keep the baler turning a steady speed. It's just ASKING for trouble.

On a deere, you have to remove a big snap ring and change the stub shaft to go from 540 to 1000 and back, and every time you do it, it leaks a puddle of oil. PITA if it has to be done on a daily basis.

It's no different than a Ford. Put the nose in a ditch, swap and run. No big deal.

The owners manual for my 24T shows a 1000 rpm drive kit in the optional equipment section. It is nothing more than 2 different size sprockets connected with roller chain mounted in front of the bale case. I suppose you could fabricate your own. Personally I would try the stub adapter and reduced engine speed first. Or better yet buy another tractor and leave one hooked to each implement, after all this is a tractor website.

Like Rufus said,IH has two shafts.Several neighbors use 1000 rpm shaft tractors.4520;4630;4650;1270Csae;IH 1486....)They simply run the tractor at 1/2 or less throttle..Thats kinda hard on the tractor as the governor 'pegs' at every stroke and things just dont function quite right. You need a contientious driver who can watch the rpm.its REAL easy to forget....A baler running 1000rpm will 'grenade' pretty quick!(ask my neighbor.)

The online parts books do not confirm it but I always thought Deere offered a 1000 RPM drive for the 300 series balers. I would call known parts yards to see if one is there to be salvaged. Here in the East there is Fry's in PA. (570) 546-3968. Something like that if they had it they might make a heck of a deal on something there is not much demand for. I am assuming you are not wanting to change the tractor out for a reason.

don't know about a 336 but my 224T parts book lists CHAIN CASE (1000 rpm Drive) as an option. looks like an oil filled box with #50-2 roller chain (double width) to drop the 1000 down to 540

Have used an adapter on the tractor and 1/2 of normal throttle speed in a pinch but the best policy is to use a tractor with a 540 pto.

If you had a 2 to 1 gearbox laying around and some custom drivelines it could be done. Seen much wilder projects.
Good luck!

There are no parts available to change JD rectangular (square) balers to 1000 rpm. They are all 540, period. The power to operate a square baler do not exceed 75 hp and require even less. If you tighten down the slip clutch to the point of locking it, you will destroy the powerline.

Sorry.

I bale with a 53 hp tractor right now, but want to use my 88 hp Oliver when I get a few things fixed on it. Is that a bad idea?

I'm talking about small squares, using a John Deere 336.

Thanks.

Roger, that is the answer I am looking for. The MoCo is 1000 RPM and bailer is 540, just looking for easy way not to switch shafts on tractor.

do a search for Hub City speed increaser. Lets you run 1000 rpm machine with 540 pto. Also have one that goes 1000 rpm tractor to 540 machine, but either are $$$$, and they mess up hitch geometry.
