I have a couple of old 56 planters in the woods. we run a 900 cyclo for corn now. I am looking into 20" - 24" row soy beans. We've been having small but persistant white mold problems. The wider the row the less problems, I've found. We started at 7.5" rows are currently at 15". I'd also like to be getting dry fert exactly where I want it. So this winter I was thinking of taking these 2 6r30 56 planters and streatching the tool bar a bit, out to 20'. using the 4 3' dry fert boxes, and stuffing in the openers. As far as the cutting welding ... I'm happy to do that. What I need to know is has any one tried to get that narrow of a row, and what clearance issues they found. We had one of the 6r30"s that used to bust up seed boxes had the wrong arms on the wheels we just changed 2 of the seed boxes to the narrow square instead of the round, problem solved. Went to a scrap yard and found all the wheel arms (bent, straight) I can get any combo now, I have both types of boxes I'll use the square ones. In conclusion I'd like to use a 56 set up, I already have the planters and most parts, so this is low buck project! Any input would be aprieciated.

So I was doing a bit of figuring, and came to a couple of conclusions. There isn"t much info on the net as far as 56 planters are concerned. Unless you want to buy one! I had a real hard time to finding an owners manual, I"ll have to get one from CNH. In the mean time, does any one have any info on pop rates? Are there any other plates other than 16, and 24 cell, Id like to use the round cornplates, not real excited about those big hole finger plates. Im looking at a plant spacing some where between 6 and 8.5 plants per foot. Can you get that many seeds through a 24 cell? Does any one have a dry fertilizer chart for a 6r30"? This is alot more paper figureing than I thought! Any help is aprieciated.
Thanks JD

Rdandersom I'll keep in mind the spacers that were made, sounds good I shouldnt need them with the square boxes but its good for the round ones!
Banditfarmer Nice beans, Id be jumping at 3 ft! Thanks for the input.

Father in law bought a 8X20.It had the straight wheel arms. The builder had made a tin extension to raise the plastic seed boxes about 5" above the seedbox bases. These were well made pieces with ridges rolled into them top and bottom for strength.raised the seedbox above the wheel when the planter was lowered. It was heavy without fertilizer. He blew the belly pump in the M before the end of the first day.

This year I switched to 20" rows on corn and beans and so far I am very happy with the way things look. With what I see and read the roots on corn and beans go out about 10" in all directions, So brodcasting fertliser is the way to go. I dont have any mold problems that I can see in the fields, And the only weed I see is mornin glorys and everybody around me has them this year. I worked my ground and this years beans are the best lookin I grown in years and I dont think I will grow them anyother way now. If you can figuar out how to get the wheel lift to fit into 20" rows thats the way I would go. I converted an 8x30 AC planter to an 8x20 and is easer to move it around and plant with. Theses beans are in 20s planted at 80 lbs an acre and are 4 1/2 + feet tall and look good for a year with little rain. Bandit
