I've owned my round baler, a Hesston 5500 for several years now. Ordered the operators manual when I got it. Yesterday I finally read the manual and found out it was way out of adjustment and that I'd been using a Clipper belt lacer wrong for years.
I'm not the natural genius I thought I was. Whoda' thunk it! |

| Even though I am am an'old hand' with equipment,I order a book whenever I purchace a 'new' piece of equipment. You'd be surprised on how much I learn and all the reminders I get from reading the books.Like JD,I sometimes refer back to them.I always say"a book is the cheapest, most usful 'accessory' you can buy". |

| I can tell you this much, I would have saved my self a lot of trouble if I'd rad the darn thing better the first time around. It wasn't all my fault, though. The previous owner made a lot of adjustments that I didn't even know about. Spent a good amount of time yesterday undoing his "fixing".
The belt lacer was the big surprise. I never got any instructions with it and I never knew what the flat piece of spring steel on a chain was for. It's to crimp the point over! I'm still not clear if I'm supposed to use it on both sides or just one, but I've been using both.
Gonna try something different today. Each belt, 9 of them plus 6 or 7 spares, requires at least 4 splices. Each splice requires multiple applications of my sore elbows and shoulders on the vise handle. Even with a cheater it's killing me. So, I'm going to try using my wood splitter instead of the vise. If I was doing this a lot I could see building a jig with a short ram just for it, but well see how the splitter works. Just have to rig a block for the wedge end. |

| | I always used to laugh when we would trade in a 20-30 year old piece of equipment and the owner would give us back the original owners manual still in the plastic bag with the seal not broken. He had preserved the $10 operators manual but trashed the valuable piece of equipment. We always joked about the "harmonically sealed" operators manuals. I try to read every operators manual shortly before I use something different. I also go back over the ones I have not read in a while. It is amazing the amount of knowledge that is in many manuals. Then others are just twenty pages of safety warnings and a couple of pages of real information. I like the old manuals as they are just about be the same as a modern service manual in some brands. |
