Hi, I live in Big Rock Illinois (about 30 miles west of Chicago) and I am looking for a 2 bottom plow to use in plowing matches. Preferablly 12"shares. If anyone has one for sale please let me know, Thanks Mark.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Leroy, I see that you are in the same area where many of the Ohio contest guys come from. I'll bet I know how you are talking about, he won the National Small Plow contest in 92, 94, 02, and 03. He also won the National Antique contest in 80, 82, 87, and 90.

Now, two years ago the 4-time win limit was removed so he could return to contest plowing. The minimum frame width has been 12" in all classes since I have been around (9 years). The Large Plow class may have had 14" as the minimum, but that class hasn't been around since 2003.

You can use your own equipment at the World Ploughing Contest. Most US plowmen don't because it is too costly to ship their equipment across the ocean. But, the USAPO, as an organization, owns a Kverneland conventional that is shipped from contest site to contest site. So, the USA, maybe not the individual plowman, uses the same plow every year, and improvements are steadily made to it. And then we also have to rent a tractor which can be a pain. Reversible is a different story, the USAPO does not own one, and the reversible competitor has to borrow one from Kverneland and start over new each year. This makes us not very competitive.

What else... the tractor does not have to be matched to the tractor. And, the only rule on shares is the Antique class requires the plow to have blacksmith type shares.

I would encourage you to get involved in the Ohio organization. They are scheduled to host the National Contest in 2013 and I might see you there!

I haven't had a tractor or plow for the last 10 or so years and due to my health I dought I could get up on them anymore. At the time I was working and could not have gotton the time off. I know I could not do the walking for the ground part anymore. I had a 49 B Deere with a No. 44 2-14" Hydrolic lift plow with the blacksmith type share and even tho it had that share I could not have gone into the antique class, would have had to be the next one up and a 1951 A Deere with a 3-12" and would have to have gone in the large plow class but was told that I could use that plow in both the local and state classes but to go on to the nationals would have had to get a 14" plow. And for the antique class the tractor had to be 1939 or older and the plow could be a different make it had to be a model that went into production in 1939 or before but as long as it was in production if that model was still made in 1950 you could use it but you had to have the factory coulters and clutch lift and not like the yetter coulters that we always ran. Next step up from antique was classic or they had a different name for it that I do not remember but the tractor had to be in a certain age range but the plow could have been older or newer. I did not at the time have anyway to transport a tractor or plow but some of the club members said they would do that for me if I wanted. I know there is an open type of class that some use 10" frame plows with 12" bottoms on. Several of the plowers have quit due to their age. One club I belong to had at least 3 competors that I know of, anouther had the world plowman, and a third club had 3 competors. The year they first had the local (county) and state matches the same weekend and same place is when several quit. I got aquainted with all these clubs sometime after Dad passed and that was in 1992 and was a few years before I head anything about any of the members doing the plowing. You are right that I am from that area. One of the friends last time he plowed won state contest but decided not to go to national and runnerup went.

LeRoy, your recollection of plowing matches is at least 30 years old. Besides, Mark will be competing at Big Rock which uses its own set of rules. A 12" frame is very much preferred for contests. At Big Rock, you could even use a 10" plow if you thought that was advantageous.

Mark, you want a 12" JD 52, 4b, or 44 with EP bottoms. Try contacting Dean Bartels in Peosta, IA. He posts on here under "Dean in Iowa". I couldn't find a post where he left his phone number. He is not too far of a drive from you. If he doesn't have EP's, he will have some at some point in the future. If it doesn't have EP's, you're just wasting your time. And, a medium frame 44 (12"/14") is advantageous because you could swap between 12, 13, and 14 inch frame width using the same plow.

A 12" IH #8 or #4 with HSKA bottoms would be acceptable also. Within the last two years there was someone on here advertising 30+ plows for sale, many IH, I thought in western/southwestern IL. Ring a bell for anyone?

This is in the last 5 years and for the local matches you can get by with a 12" but when you get to the state matches then it must be either 14" or 16". And when you reach the international matches they furnish the plow, can't use your own. Have a friend that in last 10 years went to Canada, Eaurop and Africa to plow in the world matches. He has competed and won so many that there is no more classes he can enter. If I would feel like it I could be in the group that helps put them on.

Didn't know if that Trailer Queen of yours would actually pull a plow?

Are you talking just fun plow days or compition type plowing matches? From your words that is what you are wanting. Then comes several problems. First they do not want 12" plows, only 14" prefered but will allow 16". Second is the type of match you are wanting to enter. Antique, clssic or modern? All have different rulls on type of share and plow has to be matched to tractor. Have friends that have competed so many times they are out of classes to enter.

There is a fellow over by Geneseo, IL that trade around mold broad plows. He usually has some for sale on the Quad Cities Craig's list and some times on this web site also.

I am drawing a blank on his name at the moment. I bought 3-4 plows off of him several years ago. Maybe some of the other guys on here can help you.

You did not say what type of plow you wanted. Three point or pull plow? What brand would help too.
