I"ve got a Vermeer 504G I pull with a 175 Massey Ferguson. I got both pieces from the same dealer and he is a Vermeer and Massey dealer. He said that tractor should have plenty of power for that baler but the baler pulls it down hard. The bale restrictors are no longer available for them is what they told me...I read a post on here where HayDR mentioned changing the main drive gear to a 10 tooth. Anybody have any other ideas? The tractor is fine pulling everything else I have. The bearings and chains in the baler are good also. Thanks for your help. |

| The stock drive gear is a 13 tooth. A 10 or 12 tooth gear is available from Motion Industries. I have customers with MF135 tractors runing the 504G balers. Your tractor should run this baler easy. If I had to guess what is wrong is the drum roller has a sheared SDS hub. There are 3 SDS hubs on the drum roller assembly. The parts is cheap but there is a bit of labor because you will have to drop the bottom drum roller out of the baler. Give your symptoms it’s either this or a top drive roller with a broken shaft. |

| Is there anyway to diagnose if it"s a sheared SDS hub without taking the drum roller out? I"ve got the owners manual for this baler but do you know of a technical manual for it? I"ve put bearings on the rollers and even on the drive side of the drum roller but I have no clue what is involved on taking the drum roller out. I"m about to the point of just selling it for scrap because it is always giving me problems...I think the previous owners neglected it pretty hard |

| I had a 504F, with MF name on it and model number 1450. It was not difficult to pull at all. I could stop a full bale and restart it with no problems. Tractor had 64 hp.Is the baler hard to turn over when empty? If it turns ok empty, at what size bale does it start getting hard to pull? Are belts pulling to one side? Are the governors working ok on the tractor? Are the springs stretching out good if you force a bale through it? Are the arms the springs are attached to moving up and down properly, well lubricated? I'm really out of ideas and reaching sort of far out. KEH |

| It turns over fine empty...it starts pulling the tractor down when it gets between half a bale and a full bale. The tractor runs fine...the governor is working on the tractor and the baler gives it a workout. Most of the Massey versions I have seen had the bale restrictors in them which helps a lot. But they are no longer available from Vermeer and neither is a 10 tooth main drive sprocket so I guess my only option left is to trade it off. |

| Seems like a competent machine shop could make the restrictors. |

| | Seems like some Vermeers need the bale restrictors and some don't. Is it packing the bales real tight and if so, can the bale tension be reduced? Possibly you could find a junk baler and get the bale restrictors off it. KEH |
