I've got an old sprayer with a 7 hp Briggs & Stratton and a 6:1 gear reduction to drive the pump. The engine is about worn out. Does anyone know if it's possible to take the old reduction and put it on a new(er) engine? Or would I be better off just getting a new engine with the reduction already installed? As always, your advice is much appreciated.Kevin |

| Just get the New Briggs with gear reduction, it is about $100 more. I did that for my tiller, everything bolted right up the same as the old motor. |

| When you order the new engine it will already have a new reduction assembly on it, as you stated. I would have to know your model number before I could tell you what you can mix-n-match. For example, if it were aluminum, all you would need to do is procure any old 7 or 8 horse and swap out the crank and side cover, assuming your crank is serviceable. |

| Kevin, those old BS motors could go virtually forever. But they do require a bit of TLC sometimes, and it is not as difficult as it first seems. Some new bearings, (you could have some fun if it were babbit- pouring and scraping) new rings and a valve job, (grinding compound and a suction cup) and it should be good for another generation or so. | As far as I know, the input gear for the gear reduction is made into the crankshaft. You would have to trade out the crank, to get the gear. I could be wrong, but I have never seen a non g.r. motor, that fits the g.r unit. The motor is available on fleabay for around $320.00, last time I looked. |

| | am sure it would be fine to transfer the reduction gears if the gearbox will transfer. I just bought a new 6 hp B&S engine for my tiller. finally got it to work, but the company had changed a number of the attachment holes over the years. so a few modifications had to be made. so just look close at the new motor and be sure the reduction gearbox will mount to the new motor. |
