I think we"re gonna start grinding wheat to make hog feed what size screen should I use I"m grinding with a JD #14 hammer mill with pto drive on the factory trailer option and mixing in a cement mixer I"m kinda new at all this I grew out a few crossbred hogs last winter I was grinding corn for them with a really small hole screen probably to fine I have several screens we bought two reg Berkshire bred gilts and a reg Berkshire boar we have had our first two litters since we bought the berks we"ve been feeding southern states feed but it"s went up 3 dollars a bag in the last 2 months so I guess it"s time to start grinding wheat is pretty plentiful around here Thanks Kip

DO NOT GRIND IT TO FINE! we had a Case hammer mill and i used a 1/4 or 3/8 inch screen to just crack it.be prepared for heavier hogs on a smaller frame.also need some corn and oats in the mix.

Wheat doesn't need to be ground too fine for hogs. If you feed it straight be prepared for the hogs to get "tight". Wheat is best fed along with something else. If you try to feed it straight you need something else to loosen them up. Mike

You will need the protein anyway. What I meant was to mix the wheat with another grain or something to keep their guts from becoming constipated. You will need some corn, oats, or some other thing to keep them loose. Mike

Yes hay will work. As a matter of fact when I was raising hogs I used it in my mix which had corn and oats in it. You will need something like that or they will get tight. Also be careful about using to much wheat. Don't know what the % limit is, but you can't use all wheat or they will get sick. Ask you feed suppier they will know.

With the price of wheat now I wouldn't be using it to feed my animals. I use oats and run them through the old IH hammer mill for the cattle. I have found it does not need a fine screen to chop the grain up. We used to always put in a half inch hold screen on the old Case mill but I tried the big 2 inch hole screen normally used for hay, It did a great job breaking up the grain.

This IH mill has a large hole screen with square holes and it makes a good job on the oats too.

Should also use some corn or milo with the wheat. Wheat tends to "gum up" as they are trying to eat/digest it.
