Look what followed me home Saturday. A New Holland 268 Hayliner. Got it real reasonable. The guy I got it off of said they went to big round bales 12 years ago and parked it in the shed. It was bought new by his uncle. He loaned me some wheels and tires to get it home with. Pulled it 60 miles home. Starting to clean it up and grease it up. Any advise is welcome. |

Got my 268 this spring. It had sat outside for at least 5years. Greased and oiled her up and put it to work. sheared 4 bolts on the first two bales until the rust scrubbed off, Then ran the next 1400 bales on 3 bolts. missed two ties the whole time. Yours looks in better shape too.

I sold one about a month ago. It was a good baler, but kinda the same story. Parked it when I got the round baler!

Be sure to get a manual. When going through the knotters, follow the instructions in than manual precisely. I finally got the knotters on my NH 273 tweaked, but I had to pay close attention to all the adjustments. It bales like a champ now.

Good balers, I love mine. I'm always trying to find another one reasonably priced for a spare. I have replaced some bearings over the years, had the knotter rebuilt a few years back and it's a dream to use.

My 268 looks like it it should have went to scrap 20 years ago but it wont die. I still do about 2500 bales a year with it. I have a bent pick up bar that ruins a bearing once a year but that is the only problem I have ever had with it. I will send you a copy of the manual if you are interested.

I have used one for last 5 or 6 years. Feeds alot faster than my old international baler.

Have a lot of experience with a 268. They're a good sound baler. You may need to adjust feed forks entry into bale chamber to reduce/prevent banana bales. You cannot correct banana bales by changing the pressure cranks on the rear of cahmber. They will just control bale density. Probably not good to make bales too dense. Also helps to keep a smooth flow of hay into pickup. Yes you can over load them, but they have a whole lot of capacity. Make sure hay dogs are in working condition, springs not broken. Keep areas around hay dogs clean. I have 6 restrictors on the bale chamber, 3 on each side. Make sure yours are in good condition. Knotters are much like most brands, can be contankerous. Keep them clean, greased, properly adjusted. GET A MANUAL, available from NH, and various on line sources. Very valuble information.

I have rarely been able to make a square bale - they are as you call them 'banana' bales, that fall apart when handled - even carefully. We have replaced many parts in the effort to solve this problem, on the advice of our NH dealer. I have lost the owners manual - should say mis placed it and would like to obtain another, but not sure how to go about it. This is about as technical as I get with a pc....and this took me a long timeto get to! Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.

I ran a 270 NH for years and it was a decent baler but you could not push it too hard or knots would hang on the billhook and break. Eventually wear and tear took out the forks that carry the hay to the plunger. I had a MF 120 in reserve to parked the New Holland.
I think the hay stops in the bale chamber are a big help in eliminating banana bales on New Holland.

From what I can see the rear pair of feed forks has one broken off, since there is only one there now. The forward two forks are longer and go about half-way into the bale chamber when fully extended.

You can make new ones out of ALUMINUM rod, available at most metal venders. Make sure to get the right diameter, as there are two different diameters. For the pointy end, just saw it off at an angle, and it will wear pointy fairly quickly. Be sure to use ALUMINUM. If they break off and go through the knife, you want to have something that doesn't damage the knife. And yes, I've found severed fork pieces in the baled hay. Most probably can get them from NH dealer as well, just add $. So far, most parts I've needed are available. Most in stock. Knotters and parts are common to several NH balers.

I saw one of these go at an auction last weekend, it seemed to be in decent condition, fresh paint, missing the outer shield, but rolled over easily and seemed to be tight. It sold for $150.00. If I had been close enough I would have bought it as a backup baler, which is why I stayed a long way from the equipment line while they were selling, I do not really need another baler...
