We finally got most of the bees, mice, and snakes out of the donated baler. (it sat untouched for 15 years)

So we're getting into it now.

First on our agenda was to see if the engine would run well enough to test the bailer out before doing a rebuild.

It turned over, but no sign of life at all.

We pressure washed the engine so we could see it better - released a stuck exhaust valve - cleaned out the gas tank - blew out the gas lines - removed the carb and gave it a good cleaning - filed the points flat so they worked again, put in a new condensor - cleaned up the fouled plugs - got spark - hooked up temporary gravity fed fuel line - put fresh oil in.

Hooked up the starter to a car battery (what a great option the starter is to have!)

Took a few tries to get the starter to engage, but the bendix finally broke free and engaged the engine.

A little starting fluid and a few minutes of cranking and we started getting some sputtering.

A little more - and we had her purring like a kitten - if you can call that noise a purr.

After running for a few minutes, the fuel pump started pumping gas.

Burns some oil - but we expected that. It'll need a rebuild, but so far I'm thinking it's running strong enough to get through this season.

Next step is to manually cylcle the baler and check the timing on everything - check all the components inside - etc.

Does anyone know the difference between a super 66 and just a regular 66?

I asked that same question a while ago - can't remember all the answers, but I believe the biggest thing was the wheel bearings were heavier duty on the super.

I will have to go out and check but I do not remember any difference in them at all. The biggest difference is the way they measure the bale length, then there is supposedly a difference in the pickup but I did not see that, all I have left is the axles as I thought I might have use for them.

hey leroy - any luck finding a spare needle?

We've got the baler cycling through completely now - manualy.

The big U-shaped arm the needles mount to is cracked pretty badly - but once we get that welded up - we're pretty much ready to do a test run baling some hay.

The engine's running good - we'er anxious to pull that lever on the idler pulley to see what happens. Throw some hay into it and see what comes out the other end.

But we're dead in the water with only one needle!

I've been searching around locally, haven't found anything yet.

yes - that's true - the supers could do smaller bails - down to 12".

The regular 66 had fewer bale length options - So- a pretty insignificant difference in my opinion.

I run a NH #69 with an engine like that. It was always hard to start, so I added one of those pump bulbs like thay use on out board motors. With 3 or 4 pumps of that it starts rite up.
Sounds like a great project for them.

interesting - I"ll keep that in mind.

right now it"s starting on the third or fourth try (without the starter).

But once we start using it - I"m thinking I"ll probably rely on the electric starter most of the time anyways. We"ll see how it goes.

thanks for the idea -

Wow, that brings back memories...dad had a 2 cyl Wisconsin, hand start. Starting hot was a bugger. We would put a rope on the wheel and pull. Faithful engine and baler, would have loved to know how many bales went thru that machine...What a great project

Looks like an outstanding learning opportunity for all involved. Take lots of pictures and then sort out the best for the project note book. I will enjoy viewing it when completed. I think I see purple in your future. gobble
