I own/use a New Idea 5209 MoCo. I installed a new hex shaft 3
years ago and everything is tight..no appreciable slop in the
pods. I tear the pods down and grease them with EPO grease
every other year.. as per the manual regarding number of acres
cut. I have noticed that the second from the right POD gets
rather hot while the rest of the pods are cool to moderately
warm. The second pod in from the right takes the grass from the
furtherest right hand pod and has to sling it back through the
conditioning rolls along with it's own grass. The left side, which
is the same is OK as I seldom take a full cut with the left hand
pod. Do you suppose the high heat is attributable to the "extra
work" or do I have something going wrong.. like the top pod
bearing???
Thanks

I bought one new, ran for 11 years. No heating issues, but I"d check the shims in that pod- is there less clearance between the gears, indicated by less gear lash?

Thanks for the tip. I checked my operators manual.. nothing in it regarding shims and lash. So I went to the AGCO site and ordered a shop manual for the 5209. However, I checked the machine and hot pod seems to have a little less lash than the adjacent pods. When I greased the pods this spring one pod was short a shim or two... maybe it was the one that is heating up. Some rainy day I'll pull it apart. It is now raining almost every day around here... after six weeks of extremely dry weather. Corn and soybeans seem to be recovering a bit along with the second growth hay ground.

It is common for these gear cases to run hot. I had a NI 5209. The gear cases would run so hot in real heavy hay that the paint would blister. It did it the first day I used it and lasted five years before I traded it off.
