I just purchased a New Holland 270 square baler the sales man swore that he watched it work perfect at the time it was traded in. I hooked it to the tractor upon receiving it and it doesn't pick up the hay what should I do? |

Chances are the slip clutch for the pickup is slipping. Get a manual and parts book and dismantle/clean it up and reassemble and tighten it down to manufactures specs and give it a try.

Where do you have the gauge wheel set. Are the rake teeth hitting the ground? There is a slip clutch for the pickup. Watch that and see if it is engaged. If not Disassemble that clean and replace then adjust to proper tension.

Well #1 I would ask the dealer you got it from since you said he said so it should be as said. As for it not working #2 order the owners/op. manual for it. #3 how long did it sit in the dealers lot?? Could be as simple as rusty chains and parts that have froze up form lack of lube and good old time sitting in one place. Hook it up and with the tractor running at a low idle kick the PTO in then take a walk around and find where what is not moving. Put your hands in your pockets and keep them there when you do this so you will keep all 10 fingers. When you see where things stop shut the PTO and the tractor off and work on the chains etc that are causing the problem

Not familiar with that model, but when I got the pickup head for my CASEIH chopper out of the shed a few years ago,the auger worked but the pickup didn't. There are dogs in that one that allow the bars in the pickup to turn backwards when it isn't running. I'm thinking there's probably some similar setup in that baler. Turn it backwards and look at the point where things are turning meets up to what isn't. I'm guessing something is just rusted up or has enough dried grease in it to be the place where the problem is.
