We are using an old John Deere 14 T Baler at an Historic Farm in S E Minnesota. We have just odered a manual, but before it arrives I would solicit advice about the one problem we have with the baler. Some times it makes double size bales as the lever on the left side of the knotters doesn't quite go over "dead center" so when the spiked wheel tell it to trip, it doesn't. We thought we had the answer to always run at full 540 PTO rpm, and that helps, but does not fully fix the problem. Any thoughts on adjustment that may help will be appreciated.

14T's had 2 different style measuring wheels. Is the baler in question above or below SN 58334. Actually there's no lever(apparatus) on LH side that controls bale length. Length control mechanism is on RH(passengers) side. This mechanism sometimes isn't properly resetting itself after the knotter cycles.

I have a 24T and it has made many of these "double bales" in it's life, but it hasn't made one it at least 2 years, so it can't all be due to wear. For me, it only happens when baling wet hay (which probably shouldn't have been square baled anyway). I don't know the true cause of the problem, but when baling good hay, it never happens.

Anyway, if you watch the arm closely when you're feeding hay in, you should be able to see what happens when it trips (or is supposed to trip). Maybe something on that arm is just a little rusted and needs a finger-full of grease, or maybe it needs some weld built up and then ground down, but you should be able to tell if it "trips" and doesn't send the tiers in motion. Just turn the PTO off and give the arm an extra pull up and watch to see what the "snag" is.

The manual does not address that problem as such but it could be that your windrows are to small so as not to have enough hay being feed in or your ground speed it to slow. Hay dogs not holding as they should could also play a part in your problem But as I said the manual does not really address that as such I know I just looked in the one I have here on my desk
