New Idea Corn Pickers

Looking at corn pickers to use this fall for harvesting ear corn to grind for my beef cattle. I've looked at a several, and I've found quite a few 324's and one 326. What is the difference between a 324 and a 326? What should a person expect to pay for one in good condition in east central MN?
Thanks

The 2-row machines are actually assembled from two components. A 324 is a 2-row wide gathering unit. A 325 is a 2-row narrow gathering unit. 326 is the 8 roller husking bed that fits either, 327 is the 12 roller husking bed that fits either. People often mistake the ID plate on the husker as the one for the whole machine.

I think the 326 is just the number of an 8 roll husking bed,327 is a 12 roll. A wide row base unit is a 324,narrow is a 325.
A jocky I know about got in a fight over that with a guy who had one advertized. Said it was a 327. Norm told him that was the number of the husking bed, what was the model number of the picker? The guy got real incensed over it,insisted it was a 327. He finally just got the guy to tell him if it was wide or narrow. Told the guy he'd come and look at it. Said when he drove in the guy came right up to his truck in quite a huff. Said come here,I'll show you it's a 327! Showed him the tag on the husking bed. Norm walked around and wiped the dust off the tag on the base unit and said there,it's a 324. The guy just said I'll be dammed. I always saw that tag and just thought it was a 327 picker.

I hate to talk bad about NI pickers but they shell way to much corn on the ground. Part of the problem is that todays seed corn is bred for a combine and they want it to shell easy. At $5-6 corn I can't stand to see that yellow trail in the field on the ground. The two best answers are a NI uni-system with a deck plate style corn head or a John Deere 300 pulltype picker. The Deere can use 2 row wide or narrow or three row narrow. $1500-2500 will usually find a nice one.If your farm is small and you don't mind the corn on the ground then a NI will work fine as well.

I agree about shelling. You can look at Utube videos of corn pickers and see the partly shelled ears going into wagons. Snapping rolls are worse than stripper bars for that.

There is still some hybrid seed corn available from Pennsylvania seed growers (TA seeds is one that comes to mind) that pick well. Growmark FS also gets me corn that works good with the picker. Probably still breed it because the Amish and Mennonite farmers who still pick create enough volume sales to make it worth while.

Same way with Fielders Choice. They sell to a lot of smaller operations that still pick and cater some hybrids to that market.
As far as a New Idea Uni,those stripper heads put so much trash through the husking bed,I can pick a LOT more corn in a day with my 2 row 325 than I could with a 3 row head on the Uni that I had.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to double check the tags to make sure I know what models they are. One local dealer has 6 machines, and I know of two sitting along the highways locally for sale. I don't know the prices on any of them yet.

Did IH 234 pickers have stripper bars like a combine? How did they compare for shelling kernels?

The super pickers shell a lot less than my old #7 n.i. and pickers from that era. It's the angle of the snapping rolls. The older ones had the two rolls almost flat and i figured it shelled around 14 bpa. I paid for a 2 325 super picker in 3 years with shelled corn savings.

I have a newer NI 3 row an never have seen a trail of shelled corn behind it. Actually couldn't see any difference than using the combine and corn head. In contrast my dad's Ford picker threw shelled corn everywhere.

Most 234's did and they did not shell corn on the ground. We even considered putting a IH 234 on a Deere 3020, but were unable to find the correct brackets and attaching parts.

I agree with the trash in the husking bed with the NI uni-system, But I can feed the trach to the cows the corn on the ground does them no good and also makes next years crop of beans look trashy as well. In the midwest they are finding a connection between grains of corn left in the field and sudden death virus in soybeans.Your NI pulltype is a great picker except for the shelling.

Totally agree with tomstractors. I wouldn't own another NI picker. An International picker is MUCH more gentle on the ears-both corn ears & your ears.

I just found this forum searching for information on a NI 309 picker. One for sale ad I found called a 309 a snapper instead of a picker. What is the difference? Does the picker remove all of the shuck with the husking bed while the 309 leaves most of it?
