New Holland 271 baler

Ok, its getting to the point where it is about time to start working on my baler. I bought a 271 & a 269 for $300. The 271 is the better baler. Not near as worn, but needs the needles out of the 269. I am going to attempt to swap the pickups also, as the 269 has a Super Sweep pickup.
I am new to the small square baler scene, so there are going to be lots of questions. The main one right now is...under and in front of the knotters, there are what appears to be " spring loaded dogs" the springs look like pickup teeth reconfigured. They aren't, just my description, anyway, mine are broke. What are these springs called,do I need them, and where do I find them? I do have a couple books for both balers, and have been on New Hollands parts site, but not having any luck finding the springs.

Thanks
Nick

From what you say it could be 2 different parts. One would be the plunger safety stop which I check every time I bale hay since them needles cost a lot of $$ to replace if you break them. Or they could be the hay dog springs which keeps the hay from sliding back forward so as to keep the bale nice and tight as it bales. By the way you can still get the manual for that baler from NH

They have to be the hay dog springs. The plunger safety stop is on the side, I think.
I have the manuals from New Holland, but my comprehension SUCKS today.

sounds like your hay dog springs. It is a common thing to break them. You must have them you will not bale a good bale without and you will also miss knots. Cheap to buy at your New Holland dealer. They will likely have them in stock

They are indeed hay dog springs and in addition to the two below the knotter there are also two directly below them in the bale chamber floor. Their purpose is hold the hay slice or charge in place as the plunger moves to the front of the bale chamber. Bale shape and tying problems will exist if the springs are broken.

Find out why the knoters broke before you hook it up to a tractor pto - or you will have 2 sets of broken needles. Get the timing right, etc. Turn by hand through a few knotter cycles.

hay dog stops, replace the springs, get new pins for dogs also, they won't come out easy and will be pretty much corroded in two when you do get them out.

Where are you located Nick? I got a 271 for parts that is complete, but rusty. Stopped tying on one side the end of third cutting a couple years ago, needs a twine finger lever. Was going to fix it but the finger mounts would need to be rebuilt, and we picked up a 311 over the winter.
