Farmall Plow Advice

Hey guys, I am a complete newbie when it comes to tractors and implements. I have a Farmall A and want to get a plow for it. Some people have suggested a John deere trailer plow. Other people said I should be looking for a mid mount cultivator. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I know a guy that has a pair of plows, a right and a left, for an A, in good condition , would like to sell them for use, not scrap.
He had an A with a vacuum lift. In MA

I bought this Farmall A in 1975 and it was in sad condition. It needed tires, rims, steering wheel, fenders and new wiring. The engine was also stuck. It came with a 16-inch moldboard plow. Make sure if you buy a plow that it has all the brackets for installing it on the tractor. My tractor didn't have that exhaust lift, but it had the long lever for raising implements. It wasn't that difficult to raise and lower the plow. No one at our local IH dealer knew how to install the plow so when I had the tractor running I pulled it up along the plow. Since all the brackets were left on the plow it was easy to figure where everything went.
You can see the brackets in my picture. The drawbar also needs to be reversed. Hal

Based on my limited plowing experience with Farmalls SC with C-20 2-14 fast hitch plow, 300 with F-20 2-14" plow, Super H, and Little Genius no 8 2-14" trailer plow.

My Super C with fasthitch plow was barely capable of busting the sod of my soil. Second plowing at the end of that season was a little easier, 3rd was excellent. I busted some sod for a neighbors new garden and used a Farmall Super H and the trailer plow. It worked great. I tried to use the 300 and fasthitch plow and didn't have it weighted enough and didn't want to reconfigure the tractor.

Depending on your soil I would go with a 1 bottom IH mounted plow that was designed specifically for your tractor. See El Toro's pic. It should work great. Second choice would be a 1-12" or maybe 1-14" IH no 8 little genius trailer plow. The john deere plow won't work, I imagine your IH A will refuse to pull it:)

Pics are of my Dad on a Farmall Super C with C20 fast hitch plow and Me on my Super H with Little Genius plow.

When I plowed my garden the A would pull that 16-inch plow easily. I didn't have fluid in the rear tires and when I plowed some sod the rear tires started to slip a little, but it plowed it. Hal

Those are nice pictures of nice tractors and plows, but you ought to put those big clamshell fenders on the scrap pile where they belong and put the original style fenders on your tractors.
