Posted this message earlier but unable to find it. Please excuse Me if it appears twice. I have a 3000 lb. electric winch on the front of my JD. I'll use it for pulling small logs to an area for cutting into wood. Haven't been able to try it yet due to poor weather conditions. Has anybody tried putting an electric winch on the front of their tractors? One person responded that He put an electric winch on the front of his friends Super C International. One person on the forum has been very helpful in providing information about electric winches with the quick connect to trailer balls. Have two winches: both 3000 lb models. One has spur gears the other planentary gears. One with planentary gears has the free spool out feature and has a faster pulling speed.

Ultradog,

Pulling directly with the tractor would be the best. Most of the wood logs are on very uneven ground with a lot of things in the way. My plan is to put a block about 10 feet off the ground and use the winch with the winch line going through the block to move the logs. Hopefully this will work.

In my experience the 3000 lb rating is only for unobstructed lateral pull. I have a 3500 and it's really only good for pull a quad onto a trailer. I have a 12000 lb winch that I use for winching cargo containers onto a roller bed trailer. If you aren't willing to spend the money for a serious electric winch, look around for a big hand crank winch. I've got one of those too and I can drag a truck with the parking brake on with it. The winch itself weighs about 100 lbs.

Reed,

Thanks for the reply. My experience with electic winches is zero. The JD 850 weights about 2200 lbs. It is my plan to use a snatch block with the 3000 lb. winch which should double the pulling power of the winch. I looked at a 5000 lb winch but thought the 3000 would slid the tractor
The only experience with winches has been the ones on TD 6 crawlers I own. The machines weigh about 10000 lbs and the carco winches will slid the crawlers easily with the blade down and brakes locked.
Sending a picture of one of TD 6 crawlers I have with winch. Winch has a 5/8 in. main line and is a very serious piece of winch. Place I'm working is about 15 miles from where I keep the TD 6 crawlers. Sold my old 2 ton ramp truck so its very expensive to hire people to move the crawlers. sending a pictue on one of the crawlers with winch.
