I found what appears to be a fair JD 336 at an auction, Is the 336 any good? What should I look out for? I"m going tomorrow, so if anyone has input, please post. I"ve given up on the 24T, at least I can salvage the knotters if I buy this one?

Like any baler, if it was mistreated, it can be a money pit and a headache. If it was maintained properly, it will be a good baler. Check the plungerhead area for wear, make sure there's no slop in the pitman arm (people forget to grease that fitting), check bale case for rust, wear, cracks, how worn are the chains and sprokets, resistor grids, knotters, etc.

I run 2 JD 336 balers. Had 2 JD 24T's so I know both well. The major improvements are roller bearings built into the plunger head instead of slide blocks, gear driven knotters instead of chains and a hydraulic kicker instead of shaft driven. Knotters are similar but not identical. I have heard a 336 will bale faster but I can't tell. The weak points are these: the plunger head rollers will stick then get a flat worn on them, the kicker will get fatigue cracks at the cylinder and the bale case will crack if you pull too heavy wagons. Otherwise, get an owner manual, adjust it as directed, grease it daily and it will work almost perfect. By the way, I put a hydraulic kicker on my last 24T. Then, it was almost perfect too. I sold it, but very reluctantly. I just did not want two sets of parts.

336 are good balers just not as high a capacity as a 346 because of narrower pick up width, lighter flywheel and half the hay dogs. Tim summed up what to look for very well.
