John Deere 24T Plunger Adjustment?????

I am trying to get an old 24T that has been sitting for several years ready for the field, I"ve been able to fix several issues and need to time the twine disc"s yet, but my other issue is that the Plunger seems to be very tight when it is extended fully into the bale chamber, and seems to have a fair amount of "slop" when retracted all the way??? I have read the adjustment notes, but I just do not know what I need to do??? Should I be tightning the pads or loosening them??? Also, if I run the baler for more than a few bales, the side rail on the Flywheel side seems to be getting very hot... I know close to nothing on these other than what is in the owners manual... help...
