24T Broken Sprocket

Help... I recently picked up a 24T baler and am working on getting it ready for the field. When I got it the chain for the pickup was missing. I rolled the pickup by hand and everything seemed to move fairly easily so I figured no big deal, get a chain and hook it up. Well, I made the chain up, total of 45 links, which looks way too long, I assumed it runs over the top of the top gear and around the rest of the two Idlers and the gear on the Pickup Head? Anyway, Rolled it over by hand and even with the large amount of slack in the chain, it seemed to work. Then I started the tractor and the PTO, BAM, broke the drive sprocket right in half..... UHHHHH.... now I have to find a new sprocket, which is NLA from JD... Three Questions, Why did it break? Where can I get one? Is the chain supposed to be that loose????

I may have a good used one on hand. I have a 24T and a 14T parts machine here so one of them most likely has one. E-mail is open as it always is

Either your pickup jammed or the chain was too long or installed wrong and doubled up under itself.

Do you have an operator's manual showing the routing and adjustment of the chain?

The slow-turning cast iron sprocket should be able to be welded up quite easily.

I have the operators manual, but it does not show the routing of the chain, I assumed (likely my problem) that it went around the outside of all 4 srockets with the spring loaded idler keeping tension on the chain. I did make the chain up, according to the Parts manual, 43 links, 1 coupler, and 1 offset link for a total of 45 links, when I went to put it on, it was about 3 links too long, so I did remove 3 links so the chain wasn't dragging on the ground. Does anyone have a picture showing how the chain goes? Maybe I need those 3 links back, if i had it on wrong?

Is that the chain on the right side of the baler if you are standing behind it looking at the tractor?? If so I'll go out and look at the 24T and the 14T I have and see if either one still has the chain on it

It's the one that is on your right, facing the pickup header, it connects the pitman arm to the header. There are a total of 4 sprockets involved, the drive sprocket, 2 idlers, and the one on the end of the shaft on the Pickup.

Ah so it is sort of between the plunger and the pick up on the baler. Been a long time since I have even looked at either one of these balers I have since I no long bale with a JD and have switched to NH

That's the one. I've Round Baled for a few years, and used to get the enjoyment of dealing with the product out the back of many NH balers as a kid. I picked up this 24T as it was the only reasonable deal I could find. First time working with JD equipment, hopefully I won't regret it. I did get a few bales made to test and I still have some tension issues to overcome, but it appears to work at least.

Just looked at both of them and one still has the chain on it. It would be next to impossible to take a picture sitting and the weeds etc. But I will try to explain it. From the slip clutch on the plundger crank shaft the chain drops straight down to the none moveable idler then back to the pick up sprocket then up to the tension idler. I would make sure the slip clutch if yours has it is not set way to tight. Oh by the way I have of course all of the sprockets on the one and all but the crank shaft on on the other

Thanks Old, I believe I have a new sprocket that I'll be able to pick up locally in the AM, I have a local Industrial supplier that matched one up for me, this one is steel instead of cast, so at least next time it won't break, but something else might... I do not have a slip clutch on mine, but there is a shear bolt. My chain was on like you described so I'm assuming it should have been fine, I must have something sticking somewhere will have to look closely at all points tonight.. Thanks again.

Always happy to help if and when I can. If you find you do not other parts I have those 2 old balers just sitting here rusting away.

According to the parts cat you're correct in 45 links. It states 43 links of AP22463H chain,1 BP10238 offset link & 1 BP10237 coupler.

On the chain breaking I hope the baler doesn't have a hole worn out in the cam track allowing a tooth cam follower brg to get out of the track and lock up the pickup. If so a pickup attach. tear down is in order. Also it would behoove you to free up pickup slip clutch.

I looked at everything again last night, it all looks fine and rolls easily by hand. I really don"t know what happened. I have the parts manual from John Deere and it said exactly what you stated about the links, I did end up taking 3 links out of it as there was no way it was going to work with all the links, it was just too loose. I"m going to give it a try again either tonight or tomorrow, wish me luck. I have a new solid steel gear so it"s not going to break that again.... Other than that my only issue left with it is the bilhook on the outside knotter, it"s keeping hold of the twine after knotting bales, I"m going to try to adust the tension again tonight, there is a bit of what appears to be "Mold Slag" on the back of the knotter gear on that side which runs right behind the billhook tension bracket, I"m thinking that needs to be ground off smooth like the other side?
