John Deere Subsoiler

What can you guys tell me about John Deere single shank subsoilers? What's their tree root resistance? (Tore out a small fencerow a year ago). How much power to pull one? This one just popped up on CL and I bet it would look decent behind my Unstyled A (Dynoed 35 HP at PTO last year).

Approximate fair price/value?

Thanks

I didn't know they made those back then as I've never seen one that I can recall. That would look great behind your A. I think I've been told it takes about 45 hp. per shank on a subsoiler. I know my single shank 3 pointer sure makes my 41 hp. tractor work when I stick it in the ground all the way. Mine has a shear pine if I hit something, I think I've only shear one once and I think that was on a big root.

I tried to buy one just like that at an auction a few years ago. Supposedly it had never been used? If I remember right, the final bid was somewhere over $800. I never got a bid in.

Are you sure it is a JD. Kinda looks exactly like my IH No.2. Except I don't have the diamond shaped plate on the top. I know there is a photo of an IH No2 in the photo section.

My Farmall M could pull it if I kept it less than 20" deep. If you use it, be sure to use a breakaway hitch of some kind. I found a very large rock with mine & had to be quick to clutch or the front would have come over. I stayed in 1st gear after that. It did a better job going slower, too

That subsoiler is a #15,it will pull harder than a 3 bottom plow,if you put it in the ground very deep.Price varies from 500 to 1000 depending on the condition.

I went and got it today. New paint with hardener. 1 wheel is a bit wavy and the clutch wheel's outer cap is cracked, but it is very clean and in good shape otherwise. I got the cleats for the clutch wheel too.

The seller was 99% blind and it was amazing to listen/watch him explain the work he had done to it. Once he touched one part of it he had the whole thing in his head and could walk right up to a single bolt or lever. Helped me load it and hook up the chain and everything just by touch! Pretty amazing and nice guy.

Get it hung-up on a tree root and you will be dragging it off the root Backwards...!!
It can break through some decent roots, but expect it to stop you dead once in a while..
The US "A" has a fast 1st gear and (probably) All-Fuel pistons (low HP)..
Better feed your US "A" some Wheaties...!!

Ron..

She's 400+ c.i. with a 6-1 powerblock. Grandpa fed her in the 70's ;-) We don't juice it too much though because I like the rest of the tractor too much! The load screw could be opened more (DLTX51 big nut carb).

Should be a fun implement to have around. I havent seen too many myself.
