4 X 16 moldboard

Since I think the 1 x 14 is not going to work behind the MF 50 I have located a 4 X 16 moldboard and would appreciate any comments on pulling it behind a John Deere 4020 (90 HP). Is it too much plow for the tractor? It will be used mostly in sandy loam but also needs to work in black land.

I'd think it would be fine in the sandy loam. Don't really know in black land... but around here you could handle most 4-16" plows with a 60 hp MFWD provided that it's correctly ballasted. 80 hp will drag it about as fast as you need or want to travel... so a 90 hp 2WD should do fine if it's got good rubber and correct ballast.

you could possibly pull it ok,here in central ok, 3-16s used to make one hump up, but my dad thought you werent plowing right if you could see the top of the beams.lol.I think you would be ok,you could always remove a bottom if you had to.

Here in Iowa the turbo'ed 4020 pulled 5/16's anywhere it wanted to. The normal asperated 4020 pulled it ok in 4th but had to cheat some in the gumbo. I think you will pull 4 bottoms with ease.

Anyone using moldboard plows down there any more? Haven't seen one in anything but a garden here in SD for 20 years.
Anyone who wants one come up here in the summer and attend a farm auction. A good 4-16 will go for $150 dollars.

not a whole lot, they dang near give them away around here at auctions, unless they are one or two bottom three points then they bring new prices to the food plot bunch.any small three point stuff is ungodly high here.you can buy a good 50 hp or higher tractor as cheap as a used up 9n would bring and most the larger equipment the same way.unless of course its green, town folk move out and the only name they know is jd.

I pull a 4x16 Case trailer plow with our 4020, and it handles it with ease. we have heavy clay soil.

it depends a lot on the make of plow 4X16 case plow pulls a lot easier then a 4X16 IHC we had both and the case we could have pulled 5 but not in the IHC

4020 was designed for a 4-16 plow, should work well.

In tough ground it could be a load; in easy conditions it will be a breeze.

But it's the matchup they designed it all for. :)

For what it's worth , I pull a semi-mount 4-16 565 Oliver plow with a 1755D Oliver with very few problems. Only real problem was when I was plowing a very old well established alfalfa field with worn out shares.

Neighbor had an auction some years ago. He is a hoarder, not a farmer. He had a IH 3 pt, 3-14 on the sale, never in the ground. Original red and blue paint, original Super Chief decals on the moldboards. SHins and shares 100 percent.
They didn't even get an opening bid. No saled it. I had a few items on the sale so I asked him what he wanted for it. He said 100, so I bought it . Took me three years to sell it to IH collector for 250. And that was three years ago and it still hasn't been in the ground.
Probably will be the only IH Super Chief to be 100 years old and never used :)

Pull type is a dead pull. Semi mount and fully mounted gain traction with the weight transfer system. Automatic changes through varying conditions. Also, the load is closer to the tractor...ever hear the story about a horse and a 100 lb weight on a long rope?

Here in SW Ohio I use to pull 5x16 semi-mount with a 4010 with out problem. A 4x16 on a 4020 wound be no problem unless its a narrow front, If so just put some front end weights on and go. I still plow with a 1550 Oliver diesel and 4x16 and has plenty of power to spare. Bandit
