Centrifugal Sprayer Pump

I bought a used Monarch PTO centrifugal sprayer pump for our old 3pt sprayer. Hooked it up, but doesn"t want to pump--no draw in the intake hose. Do I need to prime the pump and how do I do it?
Thanks,

Most centrifugal pumps are not self priming when the souce of fluid is below the pump inlet. Most sprayers have positive head on the pump since the tank is above the pump inlet and thus the pump is full of fluid at start up. Put the pump below the sprayer tank and try that.

Some centrifugal pumps have a 1/8" pipe plug in them close to the discharge end of the pump. The pump can be bled by removing the plug and waiting for the water to water flow out. Do not remove the plug with the pump running unless you want a wet face. This only works if the supply tank is above the pump, as it should be. I put a radiator drain cock in that hole in my pumps. Bleeding is a lot easier and if I get lucky I can bleed with the pump running without getting sprayed on. Jim

Thanks for the response. I noted the plug and have now cleaned it up for easy removal. It's a PTO driven pump, so it is below the tank. I'll prime the pump as you suggenst. David/
