Farmall H on a Thresher...

I know I've asked before: "Is an H powerful enough to run a 22" x 38" McD thresher?". I like to ask this question wherever I go. I ask again here, because of the ever changing balance of answers. The over-all response is a 60-40 split in favor of the H being a bit underpowered due to a slightly shorter piston throw. I've decided to revisit this topic due to some info I just acquired. It's a McD Threshers brochure from 1942. In the back, under specifications, it states the power required to operate the 22 x 38 thresher with wind stacker, self feeder & weigher is 20 - 30 HP. A bare-bones M & W4 are pictured below the specs. I would assume to represent the power required. Soooo.... will my H with "Fire-Crater" pistons & pushing 35 HP, be able to power my 22 x 38 thresher, even though the stroke remains the same? I'm going to toss this post around the forum a bit to see what others say.

Thanks,
Mike

I don't see why not. If you ever been around a seperator, with the smaller horse power, you don't lap the bundles while feeding it. the more horse power you feed it accordingly.

There's a cat east of here that used to thresh with a H on a 28" IHC walker thresher, but didn't load it heavy.

My grandfather used an F-20 to pull a 22" Case and later a 28" Case...obviously he said it did better on the 22". Pop said you just didn't want to "crowd it" on the 28". IMHO the IHC threshers pull easier than others.

Yes, your H will handle it. My dad used to custom thresh using a McCormick Deering 28 inch separator and used a 15-30 and later an M. He tried an H before he bought the M and it could not hold the speed up. One year the M broke the pulley shaft, and he tried the H. This was after it was overhauled with oversized aluminum pistons. It handled it good. Just had to watch they did not overload, and the bundles were dry. Wet bundles pulled the power down.
Couple years back, my brother and I used the same old machine and we run it with a H. Just slower pitching of bundles.
