ford 22-178 brush hog

I just bought a ford brush hog model #22-178 and it looks like someone has changed the pto shaft and cobbled it up. I am having trouble finding any information or pictures if this mower. Also I am thinkingf the rear swivel that hold the wheel should have upper and lower bearings? I am trying to download some pics thanks for your help

Also I checked the gearbox and it has some nasty thick grease in it, I am going to remove and clean it real good. What gear oil should I put back in it? thanks for your help

Here's a direct quote from the operator's manual:

"GEARBOX
The gearbox on the 60-inch, series 909 Cutter and the 72-inch, Series 910 Cutter is factory-lubricated with a high grade industrial-type grease that is normally good for the life of the cuttter. Generally, it is [i:a5c52a34b0]not[/i:a5c52a34b0] necessary to add grease to the gearbox. However, if seal damage is encountered or the gearbox was disassembled for overhaul, then the gearbox should be replenished with the specified amount of clean multi-purpose lithium base grease, Part No. 5PM-1C57-A, or ESEN-MIC-137-A. Factory-fill capacity is:

60-inch cutter ..... 18 ounces

72-inch cutter ..... 42 ounces

[b:a5c52a34b0]IMPORTANT:[/b:a5c52a34b0] [i:a5c52a34b0]Clean 5PM-1C57-A or ESEN-MIC-137-A multi-purpose lithium base grease should be used in the gearbox. Never use oil or the wrong type of grease, or fill the gearbox more than specified. See your Ford Tractor-Equipment dealer for the specified type of grease."[/i:a5c52a34b0]

Copied verbatum from the Ford Rotary Cutters, Series 909 and 910 operator's manual

HTH, Dave

PS: Your cutter is in [u:a5c52a34b0]much[/u:a5c52a34b0] better shape than mine! as for the PTO, it would appear that there was originally a slip-clutch, but it has been welded up. I don't believe that the rear caster had bearings, but perhaps bushings? Mine was apart when I got the mower, due to the fork being bent up, and I've never put it back on.

Hey thanks Dave..I added some lithium grease to the gearcase....should I have a slip clutch on this mower? This is the first brush hog for me....also do you have a parts lists or manual for yours? I am cleaning it to paint it back to Ford blue, just because its old doesn't mean it has to be ugly!.. thanks again Rick
