Older Square Balers

How does a John Deere 24T match up to a New Holland 268? The New Hollands seem to have a better reputation, but I kinda want to find out why.

Thanks

I think a 24T makes a nicer bale and they are a pretty good baler but just like anything else they are getting old and it depends on the care it had and how much it got used.

Around my neck of the woods all the old farmers claimed that the 14 and 24 t's were great balers but that they tended to handle the hay "more roughly" and that the New Holland gave you a better quality hay.

From experance on the old ones the JD made a nicer bale.

I have had the 14T and 24T and both where good but when I got a NH baler I found they where better as for if they broke they where a good bit easier to work on. Just of instance last year the main drive chain broke on my NH271. Went to town for the new chain. Installed it and was back up and running in 30 minute for work time on the baler. an hour to go to town and back. If that happened on the JDs it was 1 hour to town and 2 or 3 hours to time the baler again but the NH 30 minutes and that was me and my old slow ways any more

I can tell you I spent more money on repairs for the one NH baler I owned, than the 3 JD's that came after it put together. It was a New Holland 276. I was glad to see it go.

I have a 24T and it is a good baler-Buuut... Deere says some of the parts they aren't making anymore. Probably will look for a newer Deere because thats what I've got experience with. Also, the new style knotters will fit the 24 but hold on to your wallet!
