Vermeer baler troubleshooting

I just got it pulled in here last week the day before 26 in of snow came. I am itchin' to start working on it. They told me the pick up part was busted, and the vee belt is off of it. I have looked it over and can't see anything that is obvious. Would it be stupid to it it to the tractor and try to run it . It has been sitting out in a field fot 2 years since it broke. It is a 505 g. I think the paint is original and the bearings all have yellow paint on them. Which make me afraid they are all going to start going bad as we start useing it, or I am hoping it may not have all that much use and they will be Ok. One of the rollers has zerk fitting on the bearings. also is this baler unlike our previos Hesston where you had to leave it cracked open the keep the tension off the belts when not in use. Thanks

I would try turning the pickup around by hand before running it with the tractor. If the belt is off it should turn over by hand easily. My 605F wore a hole in the botton of the track that the rollers run in on the left hand side of the pickup. I never did anything to take the tension off when I parked my 605, but you can open the baler and lock it and chain the tensioner arm up to the pipe across the top to take the tension off, and then closr the baler.
