what is a JD hay rake

I came across a hay rake for sale today. It appears to be a John Deere as the frame is faded green and yellow. It has a clevis type hitch (which should work on the drawbar of my Farmall H) and there's a gearbox on the rear axle to drive the rakes. The overall width of the rakes is maybe 10 feet.

Does anyone have an idea of what this rake might be worth if the condition is fair?

Sounds like a later one or 858A if frame was yellow and green. Early ones the frames were all originally green just yellow wheels. To help identify it go the column to the left under implement photos and in the search box type in John Deere hay rake and several will come up. Make sure the gear box and clutch are good on it. Some of clutch parts and bushings are available yet for those JD rake gear boxes but none of the gears can be had new anymore. So if gears are broke you"ll need to find another 1 or 3 for parts or spend the money to put a used or new hydraulic motor on it.

Gear box rather than a chain drive? Could be the heavier duty 858, or later 640. Depends on area, but these rakes could bring $1000 or more. A chain drive 874 (later 874A) or 896 (later 896A) are worth less.

My mistake, substitute 894 for 874. Also should clarify that the intention was to indicate that the 894 and 896 were not as expensive as the others, not actually worthless.

Sounds like an old 894A we have...if so somewhere around 200-400...Although if it is a later model rake the price increases accordingly.
