American Farmer rib implement tires-will they hold up?

My rigth hand side of my 268 baler specifies 6.40-15 6 ply tires that have a 1500+ load capacity.

The only company making this size tire now is American Farmer and it is only a 4 ply with a 1000# load capacity.

The baler does not have a bale thrower.

Do you think this tire will hold up under the weight? Several tire dealers said it would but I have heard that before.

BTW: the other side of the baler takes a 5.00-15 4 ply so I am not concerned about that side.

Dave,, Firestone lists a 6.70-15 6 ply tube type implement tire rated at 1620 at 44psi....

firestone.com lists the specs; the total width is 6.6"

This may work out, but measure the diameter and width of your present tire to make sure there is room for a slightly larger tire...

Would be nice to stay with the proper size and keep the baler level.. worth checking out both ways.

Just use the widest fifteen inch pickup tire that will fit without rubbing. I have a 235-75/15 D rated tire on my 269 with a kicker. I run 40 pounds of air in it and it is only the second tire I have had on the baler since I bought it used in 1987

No, I doubt very much if it will hold.

If you can't get the correct tire from Firestone I'd look to retrofit something like an LT235/70R15 or something around that size that 'will fit'. I'd also try and make sure it's an LT or load range E. I've had the passenger tires blow on balers. They make a nice bang. One ripped from bead to bead last summer on me...

I have a new 5.00-15 Goodyear but the 6.40 -15's are currently on back order. I would prefer the tires match-not that big of a deal for most but I'm kinda picky on those things.
I may go to the Firestones if the Goodyears do not come back out.
The 6.70 -15 'stones are only 1/2 taller and approx 1/4 wider so they will work.

The right side should be the pickup side and that should be the smaller tire, not the bigger tire as you are saying. And yes even without a thrower I would go with the 6:70 X 15 tire on the bale chamber side, you are saying a 5:00 X 15 on there now and that is too small under the bale chamber but a 6:70 would be a good replacement and on bale chamber side should be a 6 ply, pickup side a 4 ply is good on and the 5:00 X 15 would be good there.

If you can't find a LT tire that will work you might try an ST they are a little smaller in width and you can get in Load range "E" that should hold up Better than 3000 LBS with 80 LBS of air.

I agree with you, I like to use the appropiate type and sized tires on machinery. Looks soooooooo much better. The Firestone 6.70-15, being a half inch taller in diameter, will only raise that side of the baler one quarter inch, compared to the original tire.

I would be concerned with keeping the baler as level as possible....

Wouldn't get that brand unless it was a 1/3 cost less of the others and would still still my last choice on brand. Had terrible luck with that brand coming apart not lasting well on tractor fronts.

Go with it they are good american made tires. Bought a 300 bushel bow with one on it. It hauled a lot of corn to town with no problems and little wear.

Just the name of a tire they are NOT made here! Dealers get them from Sam"s wholesale clubs and 99.999% of what they sell comes from china pure crap!

I"m also in the market for baler tires for a 270 hayliner with 5.0X15 on pickup side and 6.4X15 on baler side. These are the sizes shown in the original parts manual. I have found the 5.0X15, 4 ply, tube type listed on the firestoneag website, now to see if the local distributor can get them - the tire number on the web site is 368-512.
