Hydraulic wood post driver

I have searched for post drivers all over the net.. I have found a couple that would do well for my needs but are real expensive..

Does any one know of a good driver or where to get one.. I don't need it every day and don't want to spend a lot..

Shaver makes a very good driver. H-8 or H-10 models are most popular "here". The design hasn't changed in 25 years or more. There is no free lunch; if you want a decent driver, you will pay for it.

Once in a while you can come across a smaller unit at an auction sale. I bought one 2 years ago, shaver HD 8 and paid $500. 3 months later at the auction one went for $200. The newer and HD 10's and 12's will require a checkbook that is deep.Bud

I have a Danuser that does pretty good. It runs off the PTO, not hydraulics. However, if you are looking for something to use for a one time project, I suggest you hire a bucket loader. I hired one and we planted 236 posts in under two hours...I couldn't believe it. It took longer to mark the holes and distribute the posts than it did to plant them. It cost a couple of hundred bucks but it was well worth it. I find with the post driver, it takes longer to get everything plumb that it does to actually drive the posts. With the dozer, I had a guy stand the post up, I leveled it and held it for the bucket loader while the first guy was standing up the next post. I cut a piece of conduit the length I wanted the posts to stick out of the ground (5 1/2 ft) and held it next to the post, when the post was pushed in to that length, we stopped, the operator pulled to the next post while I was leveling it and on we went.

I have an older Shaver HD-8 that I bought from a neighbor for $500. It does a fair job driving posts here in Southern Illinois. When it's real dry here though with hard clay only a few inches down, I have to pre-drill a pilot hole with a six inch auger to get posts driven. I am about done with my fencing projects....might part with my driver in the spring.

I built one out of a two stage Hyster forklift mast. The inner stage is the pounder and has pounded everything I have put under it. I would guess the biggest post was a 12-13 incher. I used a 4 ft stroke cylinder and drilled holes in the cylinder's piston so now the effective area is the rod. Since the rod is now the "piston" it does move the inner mast up and down with rapidity. To tip forward and back, it I use a hyd top link. To plumb it from side to side, I made it pivot. I'll post some photos when I get a chance. It ain't pretty but it works darned good.

gwece,

I am in So Ill also. Give me a email or pm me if you decide to sell that driver, now or in a year even. I just bought 40 acres and I plan to do the whole perimeter eventually. No fence now.
