Foam Marker for Boom Sprayer

I have a 28 foot boom sprayer. You could say that I"m having a hell of a time trying to figure out where I sprayed and where I did not. I"m thinking about using a foam marker. I assume that a foam marker is the appropriate device to use with a boom sprayer. Could someone point me in the right direction as far as locating and purchasing the right type of foam marker. I think I only need a 1 gallon foam tank as I"m only going to spray 12 acres at a time. As always I"m looking for the cheapest/best solution. I know that Tractor Supply sold these at one time but it appears they no longer carry them. Any useful info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Over applications of herbicides is a waste of money and unsprayed strips is a loss in profit. It does not take many acres to recoup the cost of a marker. $5.00 to $ 10.00 an acre add up quick.
 
Where-a-bouts are you; local fellow (self-employed mechanic in West Tennessee) did have several old salvage Spray-Coupes and they all had foam markers; have no idea what it'd cost to ship a complete system. I can find his phone number if you're interested.
 
I'd be willing to bet that for that $850 you could find a good used parallel-track GPS device somewhere. Then you wouldn't have the problems of clogged nozzles, purchasing foam mix, etc for a foam marker. You could also transfer that to other implements that would benefit from straighter driving.
 
I don't know if this would work for you,but when I used to spray my sod fields I welded a length of chain on the end of the boom and let it drag thru the grass.It left enough of a mark that I could guide my next pass.Good Luck.
 
Check with FarmShow archives- a number of home made versions- need a pump, canister, some kind of control system. Air pump like in some car magazines, for air horns will work.
 
Do a google search for foam markers. There is a company, I think the name is richland or richmond industries, they make small units, some are powered by D cell batteries. I have 3 of these units, I think, don't think they cost much more than $200. I use them on a small lawn sprayer, but they adapt readily to various applications.

Build your own, DC air compressor($12), 2 plastic gas jugs($10), 1/2 inch tubing/garden hose($?), Y fitting from compressor to line to each gas jug ($0.50), imagination and ingenuity(priceless). Build one for old 16 row Hahn HiBoy for less than $25 with pieces on hand and have used it for 4 years. Now if I could figure out how to make long lasting foam I'd be really happy.
 
i use red dye in my mix...color goes away in a day or 2...bought a gallon few years back for 20 bux i think...i mighta used a pint so far spraying hay field and water lilies in tank.
 
i worked for a man who row cropped 6000 acres. we had a self propelled jd sprayer and it kept stopping up at different places on the booms. i told him that surely somebody made a filter for in line. they did and we put one on. the buy who ran the rig really qppreciated not having to handle that stuff. just thought i'd throw this at you while your working on it. you need to wear a mask any time your handling/spraying this stuff. you may think your tough, but i've contracted a fatal lung disease and they don't know how i got it or how long i have to live average of 3 - 5 years. so don't take chances around dust, molded hay and spray rigs.
 
That's a pretty nice looking rig. Looks like you can probably afford a foam marker. Myself, I use a roll of toilet paper and periodically pitch pieces of it down between the tractor tires. Works amazingly well........and cheap. One recommendation for your sprayer...take the chain boom supports off and replace them with small nylon tow straps. They will take all the shock out of the booms whenever you go over rough ground or ruts. It's just a matter of time before you bend the booms on your set-up.
 
If you look in an area where larger equipment is used, you should find a used one cheap because GPS technology has certainly made other markers obsolete. I sold a 90 ft. sprayer with a perfectly good foam system with in cab controls a year and a half ago: the value of the sprayer was $ 8000 with or without the marker however, I had no use for it, so it went with it. As mentioned, dragging a chain(with a small weight) from each boom should work.
 
Gary, tell me how this works. you've got an air pump that's pumping air into the two tanks and going out to each boom? How does the foam get from the tanks out to the end of the boom? I know the air works to transport it, but when and how is it turned into foam? How do you regulate how much it applys?
 
Air plumbed into bottom of gas jugs, foam out the Pour spout into 1 1/4 inch plastic sump pump dicharge hose. Regulated by 2 garden hose "Y"s in air supply line, bleed off air until foam glob drops as far apart as needed.
 
Years ago in a farm magagazine's inventor section they showed a cheap foam marker system a farmer made actually using shaving cream. He rigged a can on each end of the boom with a rope trigger mechanism of some sort. Might be good for a few acres but I'd hate to be pulling those ropes all day.Jim
 
Go to Agri-Supply web site. They sell Salvarani foam markers for smaller size rigs. Purchase one about 4 years for 30 ft sprayer on my 160 acer farm and have very happy not to mention a better sprayer opreator.
 
Foam markers are not so complicated. Just went through all this a couple years ago. I"d say the first thing to do is to check around as you should be able to put one together from other farmer"s broken foamers.
My foamer uses a spotlite sprayer tank and water pump, as well as an air pump.
(The water pump lets you use a non pressurized tank.)
The water pump line has a regulator valve, my water pump has a pressure switch so it doesn"t run all the time. The air line has no restriction.
The air line and water line run out to the end of the boom and are hooked together with a plastic t, the t is threaded into a 2" x 1ft plastic tube. The tube is stuffed full of plastic scruffies, (see the dish washing department).
Use ag foam. Dishwasher soap doesn"t last long in hot weather.
If you want to switch from side to side you would need valves to shut off the air and water to each side in turn.
Mine has a solinoid valve which normally open to one port, when power is applied the second port opens, this directs the water.
My foamer started life as a Landmark made by Smucker MFG. It sold for $650 new. I borrowed it from an unused set of sprayer booms. Had to replace the water pump right away. It works fine. Has had a lot of modificaitons at this point.
 
I am trying to build a foam marker using a gas can, I drilled a hole close to the bottom and inserted a vale with a air stone in it, I am using a small car air compressor. hooked up a 3/4" hose to the gas can spout, made a collector head using an old oil filter with guts taken out. put water and foam in jug, started the compressor and after running for awhile foam started out the hose, but after running the compressor for a while the jug began to expand a lot, I thought it was going to explode, so I turned the compressor off. what did I do wrong for the jug to keep expanding. can you or anyone on this forum help me? thanks
