I found a MF model 12 square baler for $1000. The problem is I don't know a lot about balers and would like to know a few things. First I would like to know when these balers were made and secondly if they were any good. I own a Ford 3000 gas powered tractor and am looking to take care of 1000 to 1500 bales a year. Any help would be great.

I've got a Massey Ferguson Model 12 baler for sale. It works, but would need a little tweeking because it will miss a knot on one side of the bale every so often. I used it for several years on my horse farm and I recently purchased a baler with a kicker on it (I'm getting too old to be the kicker!). I'm looking to get around $400. It's still in nice shape but the price is reasonable enough to purchase it for parts.

This not a follow up to the above question but a question. I just bought a Model 12 Baler and am trying to get the plunger out of the bale chamber to replace some ware plates. Anyone got any ideas. It keeps hanging up on me.

This problem usually caused by leaving bales in over winter which cause rails and shims to rust. A hydraulic ram (10 tons) positioned between the plunger and a piece of railroad track or heavy steel at the front of the box will move it out.

Having put several thousand bales through aMF 12,I have learned that you must keep the knotter assembly extremely clean. Have you considered mounting a 12 volt rough duty fan to keep the chaff and fines out of this area? Have recently moved up to a MF 124, which is a newer version of the 12 and tends to make a tighter more uniform bale. Usually one can find the newer machine for prices comparable to what you paid for the 12. Good luck with your machine.

MF knotters can be fussy, JD and NH are much better and can easily be fixed by just about any dealer. I am a NH fan although JD feeder system usually produces a more rectangular bale. If you dont care I'd look for a NH. Plently around sine everyone has gone to big square, round or baleage.

My father bought a 12MF in 1968, It was reliable the first 2 or 3 years. After that he had it at 4 different dealers to try and get the knotter working right. But nobody succeeded. It would tie 10 miss 1, tie 5 miss 6, tie 2 miss 1, and so on. Almost turned him into an axe murderer. Finally delt it in on a New Holland. Would spend 500 bucks on it every 5 years, and baled 5000 to 6000 bales ayear. JD's were good balers too. Later MF balers were just as good.

Well, I'm not going to call you Hayin' and I'm certainly not going to call you Fool. Twelves were good balers but for it's age, (late 60's into the middle seventies), it better be real good. The knotters in particular have to be clean and in relatively good shape because they had a lot of sealed bearings and bushings instead of grease fittings. They baled well but the bales were not as brick square as a JD baler. They were and are a lot better than a New Holland of a comparable age. Before the New Holland guys start screaming, I will say that a New Holland needs regular maintenance or the bales look like bananas. I used to use a New Holland automatic wagon, and an NH baler would not work because the bales were bent. What you might get with a 12 Massey though is a lack of parts from dealers. Watch auctions and salvage yards for a duplicate you can strip. Good Luck. Tom

Worked on a lot of Square balers but I can remmber only one MF, can't recall the model #tho. This one was used every hay season so I assume it was a fairly good one or he would of gotten rid of it. Most square balers are very similar in the knotter area. $1000 sounds a little steep to me but I am no expert. I know that the 14T and 24T johndeeres in my area usually gofor around $500. email me with more info if you like

My 2 cents worth. Used NH66 for years loved them, the finally died
Now have a MF12 for the past three years. A good clean machine, runs well but I agree,a good tight
bale but the knotter can be fussy and I do not like that lack of grease fittings. At 4000 bales a year, I expect it will not last as long as the NH's. Price..probably to steep unless real clean
