horse drawn hay rake

Hey folks,
wife and raked about 5 acres of hay with wooden rakes this summer because the rake (modern tractor drawn) I had laid on was needed at the last minute. Anyway, I was cleaning up around a piece of pasture that we just rented and found a horse drawn rake that seems to be intact and pretty solid. How did these things work? Is it something that I could clean up and, in a pinch, use with my ATV to rake hay?

Just brainstorming, may be able to preserve a little history in the process.

Thanks, Dave

May as well try to fix it- can always sell to Amish. A 10 foot dump rake make be a bit much for ATV- but a 4x4 small Jeep can be used for rake and rack. ATV weight is consideration. Years back used horse drawn dump rake behind H to get some hay and staw in rows to bale. RN

Seems like a dump which isn't interesting. I will keep my eyes open for a windrow though. A lot of that old stuff is thrown away over here. I've collected several harrow fields ("30x40") and some other stuff that is pretty interesting and even a little useful sometimes.

A dump rake would be a lot faster And easier than what you say you did last year. To use one you just figiure out how far you have to drive to get the size windrow you want then raise it to dump (some will do that automaticaly) and turn and come back just against your first pass and raise it at the same location as your first row of dumps, The rows will not be as straight as a side rake but you can get by. They were pulled with 1 horse so power would not be your problem with that ATV, a slow enough speed, traction and ground (hay) clearance would be the problems. And they were made for the little old 2 wheel garden tractors. Where are you at over there? Ever hear of the Alsas-Lorain ? area.
