I bought a real early JD inline baler today with power unit that had to be before the side discharge 114-116 balers.Any information would be appreciated.Thanks.I didnt have my camera with me so no pictures.

Don MacMillen's wonderful two volume book on Deere tractors and implements notes a pickup press introduced in 1936 without mentioning a model designation. The bales were wire, and hand twisted. Later, the "world's first automatic tie wire baler", the 116W, was intruduced in 1946. The first year's production was all recalled and updated that winter. The first twine tie baler mentioned in this book is the 14T which came out in 1955.

Thanks Rick.I just dug out my original 114-116W JD baler sales literature dated 11-49.It shows a picture of the JD baler like mine that the 114-116W replaced but shows no model number. It shows 3 men riding on it poking and twisting the wires. What a fun job that would have been.

Back in 1961 when I was just 12 years old I rode the wooden bale sled behind my neighbors 114W JD baler. You stacked 15-18 bales on it,then jabbed a bar between the planks to force them off.You had to hurry or you would miss a bale.I had to run back more than once to get one.I wonder how many 12 year olds would ride a bale sled today?LOL It was a hot dirty job and sometimes the tractor operator didnt stop often enough to let you get a drink.

There was a 16 between the first and the 116 and the 114 did not come out till half way thru the 116 production

Been there.done that, spent many a day behind the old side bangers on a hay slip (ours was steel, had a slot in the middle to slide the hay off, when the slider hit the end of the slip it was thrown back to the front , you had better be out of the way) in the late fifties
