Mccormick International Harvester Hay baler Model 46

This is a baler that my dad bought new and it has been barn kept ever since. Dad died in 2006 at the age of 87 and we had just made hay with it in 2005. since then it has sat in my barn and I feel that it needs a new home where it can be used to it's advantage. I will never be able to afford to replant the alfalfa fields and do not know what this baler is worth. Can anyone help me? thank you in advance.

would help to know where you are at
a lot of people bad mouth IH balers. I spent a lot of time loading hay behind one in my younger days and it is a good baler

I'm in SW Michigan 5 miles from the Indiana border. I'm 51 and this is the only baler we ever had on the farm. Always greased, always barn kept, it is in relly good condition.

Hello-
I use an IH 46. Now, here's the story behind mine. I got it from a fellow down the road, and it had been sitting, out in his field for...awhile..not sure exactly how long, but, lets just say, a number of years. I put approx. $1100.00 into it with repairs at the local Case IH dealer, but now I have an excellent square baler that hardly ever misses a bale. That said, I think you'd be hard pressed to get 1100 for it, but if its in good working order, I'd ask 700.00 and see what happens. If it needs work, I'd say 200 or 300. Thats my 2 cents.

I have been told the 46 was the best baler IH ever made.

Thanks for your replies. The only problem we ever had with it was one of the knotters didn't want to tie and it cost an 80 cent part to correct it. It is the only baler I have ever had, and made many thousands of hay bales and straw bales. I would like to see it being used. So I think I will place an ad in the Farmers Exchange and price it at $700.00

I have been loading behind one this week in Indiana that my Dad has owned since about 1979. A little fine tuning on the knives and good quality twine make all the difference in the world.

I have managed to break my 46 bailer. The upper shaft that drives the knotters and the needles isn't turning. There must be some type of slip clutch in the rear by the drive gears. I have no documentation, so I'm shooting blind. I do see the drive gear is being turned by the beveled gear but the shaft to turn the knotters isn't turning. Also, one of the fingers on the disk that works to actually tie the knots has broken off. Any help would be greatly appreciated
