I don't know anything about air planters and was wondering if these would be any good for a sweet corn planter. Thanks Denny

In my opinion,I'd stay away from the cyclos.Especially since ya lack experience in the operation and repair. Not a real fantastic planter.Pretty problematic.Every one that sells at auction around here gets cut up for scrap.

JD 494/495's are plentiful and are simple in operation as are 7000's,but the 7000's sell for alot more $.

I have to disagree with you Brad. The reliability is very good on them planters because they are a simple machine so there is nothing to go wrong. DHb if you are planting just a few acres it will work fine. The acuracy is awfull(lots of doubles) And the depth control stinks but I farm about 300 acres of row crops with a 400 and for sweetcorn it will be fine.

I agree they can be pretty much trouble free. Not the best planter in the world but better than plate planters and unless you are planting a lot of acres it will do the job. If you are particular about an even stand then I would probably plant it thick and then cull with a hand hoe. Sweet corn germination varies a lot. I've seen an old favorite, Illni-Super-Sweet, being sold with a 50% germination. Therefore purchasing a planter which "perfectly" places every seed thereby believing you will have a uniform stand is probably a lost cause before you even start.

I planted 1000's of acres with a 400 8 row, and found if you followed the instructions in the manual, did the proper maintenance the planter was pretty much trouble free. You need to make sure there is ample seed in the drum, two packets of seed from Walmart isn't enough. I can only speak for use in conventional tillage. In my opinion, if there were more 400's and more organic's you and I would be healthier. Good Luck.

I dont get where people say how un accurate the 400 is.We usually shot for 25000 population on field corn, and always raised 100 to 175 bushel corn on dryland. We also had an 800 cyclo which is also a good planter. The only problem is that some people think that unless it says kinze or john deere and costs 50-60000 dollars(used)that it wont work, and thats nonsense
