While driving thru South central (east) TN yesterday, I drove thru a little town called Athens. On the way thru I passed a little factory that looks like it had been there a while called "Athens Plow Company". Looked like they were still in business and had 1 3 bottom disk-plow out front. Getting off the main roads can be interesting.

I got a 3pt 5' disk that says Poplarville Miss. on it.

Been wondering if I could get info about this disk.

Where can I get parts for it. It works but it needs work.

70 miles which way. I'm in Dunlap TN. (70 miles west)

I'll have to check this place out next time I'm up that way.

Last time I was up there was to buy steel from there.

Even with gas prices it was cheaper to go there to buy steel.

my grandfather has an athens disc. it is extremely heavy and is great for deep, rough cutting. King is also a very common brand around here. We have a couple of PICO discs made in Poplarville, Miss. that are very good also.

They are still in business and still selling small disks. A local dealer sells 1 or 2 of their disks a year for landscapers to use with their Kubota tractors.

I didn't know they still existed. Athens was bought out by Servis in the 60's who was bought by Rhino latter. They may have reformed as an independent. Back in the 40's and 50's they made heavy duty plows and heavy duty bush & bog disks that were very popular in the Mississippi Delta.

Brief history. Athens Plow Company was founded before WW2. In 1973 Athens Plow and Servis Manufacturing were purchased by Austin Industries. In 1981 Austin Industries changed their name to Rhino Products. In 1986 Alamo Group, who also owned some other manufacturing companies, purchased Rhino Products. In 1987 Alamo Group sold Athens Plow and it once again became an indepent company. It is still operating as a private independent company as it was before 1973.

What a coincedence. Spent all summer there in 1994 putting in new equipment for Davidson Instrument Panel (now Textron??) never even thought that could be where the plows came from.

Very nice area, except I couldn't find anything to drink since it was a dry county.

They made Allis-Chalmers disc-plows, too. Did they have a Phone # up? It might be interesting to see if they have any old stock parts left. I think Servis-Rhino bought out Athens, I do know that Servis-Rhino stocks nothing of the old plows.

Didn't know that they were still around.

I Googled them and found this info:
Athens Plow Company
11 Green Street
Athens, TN 37303
(423) 744-7569

They used to make a 2-disc mounted plow for the Fordson F back in the 1920's.
