The 894 is junk. i owned one. tied hay in KNOTS thanks to its extremely perpendicular raking pattern

Although I haven't used mine all that much, I've but never really noticed your concerns. Perhaps I'm not critical enough. However, I do believe that you can adjust the basket angle on my 896A to counter/control any "roping" tendency. I assume this feature is also available on the 894A. Perhaps after baling 10,000 or so more bales, I'll feel differently, but at the current rate that might require a couple of decades.

I was looking for the JD model 115 blade parts book and found the 890 side delivery rake operator's manual. I was wrong about them being the same. The tread width of the 894A is 4ft 6 in, the 896A is wider at 6 ft.

I have an 896A which should have the same tire width. Will be going to the farm tomorrow and should get a chance to measure.
