It is so simple to check - look at what Bob and Coloken wrote, they are right on. The only thing we did different was to use an actual half bushel measure to fill the drill box after making those initial rounds. If you are real concerned you could check it several times and average them.

Look for a tag on end of grain box. Later DRB 20-8 a 13 ft. 4" drill holds 22 bushel and later JDs, 8200,8300,9400,520 hold even more so bushel per ft. won't work on later ones. Just measure it putting it in.

The one here holds (19) 5 gallon pails of rye seed, not really sure what that is in bushels.

Older IH, JD, Moline drills from the 50s, 60s, were typically about a bushel per foot of width. Later ones, like the IH 510, JD 8300, run about 3 bushels per foot. Sure is nice to run a few hours without refilling. My 10 foot Moline could make two rounds, half mile field, but not a third. 8300 was a big improvement. Also had windows to see the seed level.

Yup, gotta go with Allan on this one. Our 12 ft. Van Brunt B drill holds about 12 bu.

What did you end up doing with your old drill? If it wasn't so far I'd have been there to get it. Don

Top it off level. Seed a measured amount of acres, then refill it, using a 5-gallon bucket, filled not quite full. 2 buckets@about 4.5 gallons each = one bushel.

Divide the bushels it takes to fill it by the acres seeded, and you have "BPA".

Yep Bob. That is the way I do it too. But the first fill will tend to shake down a bit. I make one round and refil, then go from there.
