I need to plant 1000's of trees in rows. Has anyone ever mounted a hydraulically driven posthole doigger on the FRONT of a tractor? I was thinking of a small forklift mast on the front with gravity down, and mounting the post holedigger to it. I could have the planter on the rear and do it in one pass. opinions, ideas welcomed..... .

Check into SkidSteers and post hole diggers for these.

If you"re planting that many trees, it would pay to buy the skitsteer and attachment, put in the trees and then sell the equipment after you"re done.

Morton,Wickes,Lesters etc. all Pole Shed Builders all used Danuser Hyd. Drills mounted on their Tractors Front Loader. Some used Rear Augers I know but most used Loader Mounted . Had a bracket on the side of the Loader arm where the Auger was attached. Hyd. Driven would be the only one this would work on unless your Tractor has a front PTO.Don't know how that would work.

Bser,
My tree planter setup, takes a lot of hp to pull.
I plant typically 200-500 (bare root) trees per year on my small tree farm. Just hook the the planter and go. Can plant up to 10' trees. Its just a bigger vee-ditcher sub-soiler combo.

But since yours are potted at 18" you really should be using a 36" auger. Some people say the hole should be 12" bigger on each size than the pot. That would put you at 42". Biggest auger I have seen around here is 36".

For 1000 trees, I would rent a Bobcat and a 36" auger. The auger is right in front of you, no loader to block your view. Reversing the auger is just flicking your thumb back on the switch.
And they are pretty much self-leveling within reason.

Trying to mount an auger on a fork lift, I would bet you would have half of the holes punched before you got it mounted good. There is an extreme amount of torque on a 36" auger when it catches a rock or something hard in the ground.

Bobcat $200, post hole digger and auger $100.

My thoughts,
Rick

I rented a Deere skid loader with an 18" auger to plant 200 potted Spruce trees this spring. Really worked slick. Cost was $180.

If you plow and disc the rows that you are going to plant the trees in, you could use a ferris wheel type tobacco planter to plant the trees with. Lord knows you can pick up a tobacco planter cheap around here!
