Dealer has a JD 350 sickle bar mower for sale. I need a mower to cut ditch banks from topside down. Will this mow on an angle below horizontal? If so, how far below leval? Portions of my ditches are almost 45 degrees below levall. The dealer could not answer the question and did not have a good area to hook up to a tractor and test.

You'll be limited by the chain length that raises the cutter bar head. This is adjustable, and one can extend it, but you'll then lose a bit on the height that the end shoe can be raised. I'd recommend a manual, and a 7 ft. mower is fine, but a 9 ft is too much bar for the break-back mechanism. Certainly, one can mow at a downward angle, and if you can get the rear wheel of the tractor on the same slope, then the whole unit is basically in line. If the heel goes over an elevation, it will prevent the end shoe from tracking down on the ground below horizontal. I've been pleased with mine, and the prices have dropped like a rock post-disc mower invention.

The 350 is a "pitmanless" mower, and will cut at any angle that the cutter bar can physically pivot to.

Beware... the drive "head" on those can wear out and is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to rebuild.

In actual practice, I haven't been able to do this great a range of angle, due to suspension system, which lifts mower when 3pt hich is rasied.

John Deere owners manual for the 350 mower shows these specs with inner shoe at ground level.
Cutting range : 45 degrees up / 30 degrees down. Unit weighs 630 lbs.
