I have been looking at a 4 wheel rake with a 3 point hitch, It looks like half a v rake has anyone used these and are they gentle, I would like to use it for hay and windrowing for seed production. Any thoughts would be appreciated, and by the way what are they worth?

I use a 3 wheel to turn my wind rows out of a 9' haybine.Very gentle at a slower speed.

I have a Farmhand 4 or 5 (funny I can't remember which)wheel rake thats tow behind not three point. Old is right, it can be a pain to setup. I think it is gentle though. Wheels don't spin or turn that fast and hay isn't really lifted off ground. Had to remove a wheel to match my 7 ft mower.

Some are more gentle than others. The gentlest ones have long willowy tines, the one I have (New Idea but takes Farm Hand tines) has stiff wheels with short tines. Its good at gathering dirt with the hay. That bothers horse hay customers. All wheel rakes are good at gathering dirt because the tines have to practically hit the ground to be driven.

The beauty of a wheel rake is that its very gentle on the hay. My book says a wheel rake pulled at 8 mph moves the hay at 5 mph. A parallel bar raked pulled at 5 mph moves the hay at 5 mph, and a four bar rake before the parallel bar rake pulled at 3 mph kicks the hay at 5 mph. No matter which rake, the faster you move the hay the more leaves you loose and the hay's value is all in the leaves, the stems have value only in holding the leaves for the critters to eat.

I have one but I only use it as a back up rake now days. I find its hard to keep it sitting just right so it doesn't either miss the hay or it digs into the ground when rakeing. We payed something like $350 for this one about 10-15 years ago
