John I have a 1256 that is turned up to about 150 hp with duals I pull a 11 shank pull type with the spades bits (not the little chisel points) and it is all I want behind me the first time some of our ground was chiseled I didn't think I was going to get through it. We try to rotate every 2 years by the second or third time it's alot easier but I wouldn't want any bigger and I have thought about taking one shank off. By the way my chisel is a big heavy old Case brand I got for almost nothing. Brian

thanks for all of your comments/suggestions, alot of good ideas. sounds like a pull type would be best. all the fields get chisel plowed on a three year rotation by the guy who rents our farm. i have chiseled before and enjoyed it alot. just would like to put the 806 to work once in a while.
love to smell the fresh worked ground.

Three points probably pull easier because you have the draft load pulling down on the tires giving you more traction. They shake the bejeezus out of the tractor though. One thing nobody is mentioning is that a lot of times you chisel plow in horrible conditions like this year. It is wet and you slip and slide. You also have to consider your soil type and how deep you are going to pull. I have a 4-150 white with good tires on it that I am pulling a 10 shank pull type IH chisel plow that works the snot out of the tractor at about 12 inches deep. I was snickering thinking about all the claims of what people pull on this board with 2wd IH tractors when I was doing it too. I wish I could have had an open field day to have everybody that wanted to hook on it try it that day. It is our torture field that is heavy clay and it had about 20 years of plowpan that had to be broken up under it. It was BRUTAL! The 4wd makes a huge difference too and if you dont have it you don't want to oversize your equipment. I would probably buy a 5 tooth pull type soil saver or chisel plow (they make them) and you will still think you have the titanic dragging behind you. You don't have to get it all done in 15 minutes so it is always smarter to dig deep but not wide! You can always make more rounds but I am telling you, if you size the chisel plow too big you will hate the whole experience. You don't have to rule out the 3 point ones, I just like trailer ones. Look around and find a good deal. Chisel plowing can really do your ground some good if you have not done it before. It leaves a nice level surface too. Good luck and have fun!

Well, a lot depends on your soil conditions. In our parts(NE/EC Wisconsin), we can only pull 4-16's with a 105 HP tractor, and a 7 shank chisel with the same one, going about 6" deep, maybe a little more on occasion. That works out to 25 HP/16" bottom moldboard or 15 HP/shank for a chisel. IN other parts of the country, guys can pull the same 4-16 plow with a tractor almost 1/2 that size.

Our top soil is only about 10" at the most, so any deeper is just stupid in our feilds. We try to keep it at about 6-8" max.

Well,I like to dig deep.We run a 9 shank pull-type with a White 2-155 (150hp)Run it all the way down which is about 18".
In certain parts,it'll bring the tractor to it's knees in 3rd direct.
They always said 10hp per shank, but I think that's just scratching the surface.

john IH, I pull a 13 shank 3-point model,(shank spaceing is 12 inchs) with my 966. Does a great job. Speed depends on how deep and what operation i am doing.
Most of the time I run 12in and 14in sweeps at 8 to 10in deep. Run in Low 3 & 4, sometimes TA engaged, but most of the time it is in Direct, (lever forward). Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Pull type only for me. A mounted chisel will beat you to death.A 10 ft. would be as wide as I would want at best. 8 ft. would probably be better depending on how deep you want to go.

I pull 9 shanks with 86 hp, it does it but not well. The other '86 hp' has the pump juiced one turn and it does pretty well with it but its all I want. As to 3 point, I couldnt imagine putting 8 or more shanks of a chisel plow on a 3 pt.

Has a framework similar to a field cultivator only heavier and has shanks that can be fitted with either chisel points or sweeps. With the points they are used for shattering hard ground often used for primary tillage.

My 85+ hp tractor did not do a good job pulling a 10 shank, 2 inch point, chisel plow in my heavy clay soils.

I run 12 shanks now with 135+ hp and that goes pretty good.

Spacing is about 12 inches between shanks.

I've only used pull type, I hear 3pt can shake you around a little bit.
