Gleaner K Variable Reel Speed Driven Sheave

Hi everyone, I have been lurking here for a while but need more specific help. I have a 1972 Gleaner K with a grain head which I use to harvest native prairie seed. My issue is a hydraulic leak coming from the variable reel speed driven sheave (figure 8 on page 17 of the manual). When I try to increase the speed of the reel, the "collar" that holds the sheave in place slides to the left and hydraulic fluid shoots out. The reel will turn very slowly without leaking but I lose a lot of seed if it's not turning fast enough. Is this as simple as replacing o rings in the sheave or does the "collar" need to be tightened down more? New bearings perhaps? Any help is greatly appreciated!

There are O-rings, backup rings, etc. in there, it's a sort of hydraulic cylinder.

Go to https://parts.agcocorp.com/us/en

Select ''Search by Parts Book'', Enter ''EIII'' as the model, click on the EIII/K Series parts catalog, then surf down to ''Header - Variable Reel Drive''.

Thanks for the link. Do you think it's worth replacing everything in there? This machine only gets maybe 30-40 hours of use in an average year.

Hydraulic oil is expensive, and you need the functionality of the variable drive.

I didn't check on the availability or price of the individual parts or the kit, and perhaps they are common O-rings.

I guess the best thing to do is probably to just take it apart and see if anything is obviously worn or broken and order parts from there. I appreciate the advice and will update this post after my next step.

Just wanted to follow up on this post. I ordered 1 of each of the items listed below from Ziegler CAT last December (plus ATF from local fleet store) and replaced them a few weeks ago. Everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the help.

  • Item 70923854-200 (O-ring-x 50,17 X 5,3). $3.11.
  • Item 70926622-200 (O-ring-2.002 ID +/-). $2.17.
  • Item 71171805-200 (Seals Kit). $8.46.
  • Type "A" automatic transmission fluid, $5.99 each.

Very much appreciate the follow-up post. Very few do that and it really helps those that in the future that search for information on the same problem.

I hope this helps someone in the future. With these older machines, it can be hard to find the info you need and I don't want to be that guy that doesn't give back, even if I don't have much to offer. This forum has helped me more than once.
