Fun 105 repair job

I have a miserable repair to do the 105 Deere tomorrow. The seal that goes between the fan housing and the cleaning shoe has a big piece missing. Not sure how some of those bolts are going to come out. The engineer that used slotted head bolts rather than regular bolts is not on my favorite person list. I hope that I do not have to drop the entire cleaning shoe. Plan on replacing all the rubber bushings as well. Only good parts is that the weather is going to be nice with a high temp of 76 for tomorrow. Hope to cut rye latter in the week. Tom

Broke the fan shaft in my JI Case 1665 once. Lots of 1/4 bolts to take out and replace. And at 52 wide it was a s o b to get the bolts in the center of the housing.

I did that once on ours, I believe I took the whole assembly out, and re-did everything at the time. This is the long strip of canvas that connects the cleaning shoe frame to the fan?

What are you using? I know I couldn't get a new one 20 years ago. Used the metal brackets and some denim cloth from the local craft store. When it was done I got more serious about putting moth balls in there to keep any critters out.

If I remember right, I cut a lot of those fastners with a grinder and slitting wheel. It was 20 years ago though, so I don't remember all of it.

Any chance you can wedge something in there to get done? It isn't a quick job for sure. Or take the sieves out, crawl in with a piece of fabric and some glue, like for cab foam, and glue on a patch for now? I hate big, putsy jobs like that when the crop is right around the corner...

good luck with it all.

Don't worry about those engineers, sixty years after they designed it they are all either very old or dead by now anyway. Cost is always an important factor in designing farm machinery or it won't sell. They would probably feel pretty good that a machine only designed to last 20 years is still in use at over fifty years. They would also be amazed that parts are still available for a machine that old.

Parts Depot had a brand new one in stock. I bought a bunch of NOS parts last spring and have several for 95's. Been messing with the line people most of today so I havent started yet today on it. Tom
