JD 6620 Combine Fluids

I recently got a JD 6620 Combine. I attached a picture of the air filter packed with Bahia Grass seeds- to give an indication of the Maintenance it has received:)

My question is about the Transmission and Hydrostatic Drive system fluids.

The manual says:

1) Transmission- JD API GL5 80W 90W Gear Lubricant. Capacity 11 qts.
The JD GL5 gear oil is $40 per gallon. Anything special about this? Or can I use any 80-90 wt. gear oil meeting GL5 specs.?

2) Hydrostatic Drive System- John Deere All-Weather Hydrostatic Fluid or oil meeting J21A.
The folks at the local John Deere place were a bit confused but finally said use Lo Viscosity Hy-gard.

Any suggestions for what to use welcome:)

Thanks!! Rich

Any gear oil GL5 and the correct viscosity will be fine. And of course, make sure a new air filter is on the shopping list. :)

Good grief!! Don't believe I've ever seen an air filter that clogged, although, when I was running a MF by Hesston self-propelled swather for my son, I asked him once when I changed engine oil if I should clean the air cleaner as it appeared to me to be pretty dirty. He said, nope, not unless the warning light said it needed cleaning. So that's what we did, and never had a problem.

The J21A oil was similar to type F ATF. The low vis Hygard can replace it without issue.

When I was working on combines at a Deere dealer, all the older combines got straight 10 weight oil for the hydraulics. Regular Hygard was thick enough to cause some issues in the hydraulic system. That said, I dont think that would apply to any of the pre 9000 combines.

lo vis for hydro and regular hi guard for the hydraulic system. the 80-90 will be fine in the tranny and final drives. what ever you do don't try to clean the filters, get new ones. By chance does it have a pre cleaner bowl?

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I will follow the suggestions for new fluids:)

There was a question about the air filter. It does not have a pre cleaner bowl. It goes directly to the turbo/manifold. Attached pictures. I do not know how all the seed got in there...every thing looked tight when I took it apart.

Thanks Again!!

Actually, I may not be right about the pre-cleaner. I don't really understand how it all goes together...I will have another/closer look and follow things out better. And I welcome any comments on the typical setup of the air cleaner.

the pre cleaner should be on the outside of the machine , follow the air pipe that come into the filter housing. I had a 7700 that I put a wrap of duct tape around the filter housing where it come apart to change the filter.

The filter inside the grain bin was not their best idea.
Plus in some crops like very wet corn or rice, the pipes hanging low have to create issues for self cleanout.
On the 8820 they could have put the filter between engine and cab and have a much nicer setup but they could not do it on narrower ones.

On a 7720 we use regular 90 for the transmission and Regular Hy tran type oil for the Hydro and hydraulic and yes they have separate reservoirs. The tanks also have a filter where all those bolts are in a circle on the side or bottom of the tank.

The hydraulic system can have standard hydraulic oil but the hydrostat needs low viscosity. The Deere versions of these have been in our 20 series combines since the early 90's
