New Combine

I went today and looked at a 1978 Gleaner K2, this thing looks like it just came off the showroom floor, everything works, even the sensors and alarms, it has the AC turbo diesel, hydraulic unloading auger, and heat & A/C. Well, I ended up buying it!! I am getting a spreader and a chopper with it, someone told me years ago that putting the chopper on for corn would be hard on the combine by slinging cobs back in the machine, is this true? I just want to know before i put it on. I'll get some good photos and post them on here.

My Gleaner K is for sale, comes with a KL238 corn head, needs a few odds and ends but overall its not too bad, 250 GM gas motor. Does a great job picking corn, if anyone is interested just reply back. I'm asking 3,000 for it. I am located in the western part of NC

Yes, the chopper will throw cabs back at the the rear end of the walkers and beat them up. There are items to prevent this. Curtains, speed changes, heavy walker ends, etc.

Congratulations. I had a machine just like that. I ran it for 3 or 4 years with a 330 head. Then I traded for an F2 w/4 row head.

A corn kit will include a heavy curtain that fits just in front of the rear panel, behind the walkers,. Remove for other crops. Corn won't hurt it a bit. You have a rare fully optioned K2. Enjoy!

I took the chopper off my K2 because I bale the straw, but I think there's a decal on it that warns about using it with corn. I bought a beautiful little K2 gas from one of the other members here in July of 2020. I love that little beauty, has Garmin GPS and the whole works.

As others say, cobs will damage the walkers unless you use some of the modifications to stop that.

Generally much better to leave chopper off in corn, I found over the years the chopper got wore down and beat up itself with cobs running through it.....

Here is a couple photos of the K2

Get a 3 row corn head and upgrade to a series 3 header and you will be in combine heaven! Nice looking machine.
In my area, everyone runs a chopper in all crops unless it's to be baled. The residue decomposes much faster when chopped and is spread evenly over the field, which is critical if no tilling. My chopper has been on my Gleaner for almost 4000 hours, or 35 years, with no ill effects on the combine. The chopper does need replacement knives after some time. Farming practices differ across the country.

That sure is a extremely well cared for K2!!! Its great to know these jewels are still around this big country so maybe someday I will find a similar one that isn't beat to hell. I'm just curious what you had to pay for it?? You can Message me.

I don't know about the Gleaner but The JD we had the sheat metal of the chopper would not handle cobs, did not take long for the chopper bottom to be completey destroyed. Took it off after that.

Our F2 has a shield between the chopper and the walkers to prevent damage, I just assumed this was a factory item :)
