Gleaner Variable Speed

The original subject was Re: Gleaner Variable Speed.

So I left the variable speed alone last year and I decided to revisit the issue this year. Everyone provided great advice and I was able to get the lower sheave to move as expected and the variable speed now works. I have some new questions now. I took the combine to the road and was working the variable speed back and fourth in each of the gears. I noticed if I tried to start the combine from a complete stop in third gear with the variable speed set to the fast side the lower variable speed pulley would lock up when releasing the clutch. Is that normal? Were these combines not designed to go from a stand still to the highest speed setting or is this an indication something is wearing out?

Lock up - you mean the belt slips? A sign you likely have a worn belt and more so worn sheave, the pulley wears and leans at the wrong angle for tge sides of the belt. What ined up perfectly when new is a little off 40 years later.... belt just doesnt bite into the sheave as it should.

One should always start in third gear with variable speed in low, I idle down the engine to half speed to start high gear, on all my old combines.

Do you drive your tractor like this? Slipping the clutch at Full throttle and high gear? I do not think they will last long.

Yup, anything in there has the variable speed setup. Works great, all models of combines used that design, squeeze a belt to change where it runs on the pulley to change speeds.

Its pretty common for the belt to slip in high gear, that is a very steep gear ratio to move that much weight. Add in the years of wear......

what model? I have an E but Ive never never tried to start in variable speed high. If your sheaves are worn, the belt will slip and it will chew the belt up. I had mine re bushed and it made a tremendous difference in pulling power and belt life
