The fun involved in making square holes. Unlike tractors combines have a bunch of them.

Why did you mention them? Square holes are great for sheet metal and easy to do with square punching machines-They are put in fast and many per minute and perfect fit for round head carriage bolts. Seems ideal for grain harvesthing machine as nothing hangs up on them and they can hold stuff together in awkward places. Even the old binders had them?? Cleddy
 
Yes,they are easy to punch out when you have machinery to do it. Not really a challenge , it's just too many of them. Averaging about 3 minutes on the sheet metal and about 15 minutes on the 1/4 inch. Didn't check the 1/8 inch. It's all good when you're having fun restoring an old combine. Gaston
 
How are you doing it?? They look good and that is difficult to do with basic shop tools. I suspose it is a lot on restoring a combine? I want to work on a Gleaner E and hope sheet metal is good? Cleddy
 
The part that you see is the grain bin support. First I put the new metal behind the part that I am going to match it up with, then with some help we aligned and support with vise grips. From here it can be done in two ways. One spray paint the holes then center punch the centers . Drill a pilot hole first then drill the actual size for the holes. Then we match two of the holes with the corresponding carriage bolts skipping every other hole. Use a square file to finish squaring the holes. I have used a Dremel to start squaring the holes in thicker metal before filling . My son is posting videos of the restoration on YouTube. The one with some square holes is the one we did this morning. We didn't film much because it was hot and didn't get enough material for this week's video. Is under gears with Gaston.
