Harvesting winter wheat - Gleaner F2

Here's a few pictures of me harvesting my whole 7 acres of soft red winter wheat this past Monday (6/18). Got it planted late (close to Thanksgiving) as I was late getting beans off this field due to needing to find a different header for the F2 when the dropped finger on the conveyer auger on my other 13' head put it out of commission. Only made 44bu acre (vs. 85 bu acre last year in another hilltop field of mine). But test weights ran about 62.5 and moisture was down to 11%. Glad I got it out and double crop beans planted for the rain. I put all new stationary knives in the chopper and wow what difference that made. Beans won't have fight their way thru a straw mat to come up. Last pic is my 14 year old middle son's first lesson in running the combine for the last few rounds. Mike

Had an F2 just like that one. Good machine, easy to set and operate. Now turn the
a/c on, close the door and enjoy the harvest with your son.

Well the AC doesn't work. Haven't really tried to look into why yet. Does not look to have 134 fittings/been converted. Yes, AC sure would have been nice.

Wheat was short and given the yield, straw was thin to be worth baling. And it's not worth too much around here, often only $1 per square bale. Next year I might plant 10 acres in a bottom field that's easier to access and bale up some squares.

The important thing was getting done that Monday and getting the double crop beans planted the next morning before we got a half inch of rain which was critical to getting them to germinate. The thin straw stand and chopping what came thru the combine made for a clearer field for the beans to come up.

Ryan - yes I think Tan interior came in 81 and 82 before the F3 came along in 1983. It also has the factory clean grain elevator speed up kit which worked great for shelling corn. It drives off the fan and not the shoe. Mike

Wheat straw around Owensboro, KY sells for about $5 a bale unless you catch them still baling, they will cut it to $3 out of the field.
