Massey Harris 27 combine

I am fairly new to your forum, have been reading it but very seldom post I enjoy the articles. I am curious to know if you can tell me what year the Massey Harris 27 combine used the Hercules jxc engine. It is my understanding that this engine was only used one year. Also if you would know the reason why they made this switch for one year? Can you also confirm the other engine they used in their other 27s was a continental. I am restoring a cletrac that had a jxd Hercules engine in extremely poor condition and my neighbor offered me the Hercules engine out of his 27. I removed that engine about 16 years ago and I'm finally getting to the restoration on the crawler. Now my good neighbor has since passed and I never asked him what year that combine was built and I would just like to know for the record. Thank you all for any help in advance.

Massey 27 combines only used flathead Chrysler 6 cylinder industrial engines...The only older Massey to use a Continental engine was the little 35 that had a 4
cylinder..

That?s what I was thinking too. I have manuals, brochures, and in some instances the real combine from the 21 up to the Super 92 and they all show Chrysler engines. I have a 35 too and it?s a continental.

I'm restoring (2) Cletrac crawlers now both with JXC engines and will today pick up another complete JXC out of a John Deere 36 thresher as a parts motor just in case.
You can PM me with question if you have any.

My neighbor purchased this machine new. Wish I had requested more information at that time. I personally pulled the engine and it was a Hercules JXC engine. I believe this machine is still inside the building that it was in when I pulled the engine. I will check if Summer ever arrives. Can you tell me where the serial # plate would be located?
1903 bluepill I couldn't open the images. My Dad had a 55 John Deere combine in the 60's it was a 6 cylinder but don't know engine model. I know the head bolts were shorter then what is in the JXD.

What model Cletracs do you have? Mine is a BGSH 1948. I have no
experience with crawlers, I have never even driven one, looking
forward to my first ride.

I just bought the 27 listed in the other post. To me it looks like a chrysler flathead 6 in it. The engine needs some work, but at
least parts are easy to get.

If there ever was a Hercules engine in a 27 Massey combine the factory sure didn't put it in there....I have a 55 JD combine with a 237 Hercules and a model A Gleaner combine with a 237 Hercules flat head 6 engine..

I agree with the others on the motor. I have never seen or heard of a Hercules in a Massey 27 Combine. I would say it wasn't factory. I will attach two photo's one off my Massey Harris 26 and 27 combines. The name plates are on the right side of the machine near the straw spreader. Please let us know what you find out.

I visited with my machines today, He is putting seats and guides in the JXC Hercules for me. I mentioned this discussion to him and told him that maybe I was wrong and somehow that engine was not original. His comment was "you are not wrong, I will have to start looking for my old Massey Books". He is 75 and has a lot of experience. I am not trying to offend anyone here just would like to figure out how and why that engine was in that combine. I can assure you that if the engine was put there to replace the original Chryler it was a perfect fit without one thing out of place. If and when I am able to fine new information I will be back to share it. Have enjoyed reading all of your thoughts.

If she is that rare, you need to put back the Hercules in the 27 and find another motor for your crawler.

I bought a MH Super 26 new in 1950 or 51. It had a Continental engine instead of the Chrysler
because Chrysler was on strike when it was built. Still have it and hope to cut some wheat this
summer

Where is the distributor located at on this engine? Is it on top of the head or is it on the side of the block?I have never heard of a Continental engine in a Massey Harris self propelled combine except for the model 35..

It had a magneto on the side. After several years work I converted it to battery ignition. In the 60s I stopped doing custom work and moved to our dairy farm where I raised no grain so I sold it. In the 80s I found it ready to be scraped and got it back free for removal. Someone had converted it back to a Chrysler. I got it running and cut some wheat and the funny thing I remembered where every lever was.
